Excel
Excel
6.1). Значения серии X в поле выберите диапазон столбцов, содержащий порядковые номера от 1 до 6, которые вы создали во вспомогательном диапазоне1;
6.2). Значения серии Y поле выберите номера первых строк (кроме заголовка строки) в вспомогательном диапазоне2;
6.3). Размер пузыря серии поле выберите все серии первого набора значений в исходном диапазоне данных;
21.2) Во всплывающем окне Диапазон меток данных окошко выберите наборы значений в исходном диапазоне;
23.2). Форматирование меток данных панель, щелкните значок Параметры метки стрелка раскрывающегося списка;
24.2). Форматирование меток данных панель, щелкните значок Параметры метки стрелка раскрывающегося списка;

In Dot Plots we show how to create box plots using the Dot Plot option of the Real Statistics Descriptive Statistics and Normality data analysis tool. We now show how to create these dot plots manually using Excel’s charting capabilities.
Example 1: Create the dot plot for Example 1 of Dot Plots using Excel’s charting capabilities. The data for this example is replicated in range A3:C13 of Figure 1.
Figure 1 – Dot Plot (step 1)
Step 1: Highlight the first two rows of the data (column headings and one row of data) and select Insert > Charts|Column Chart and select the Clustered Column option. The result is shown in Figure 1.
Step 2: We next click on the chart and so Charting Tools appears in the ribbon. Now select Design > Data|Select Data. This will bring up a dialog box similar to that shown in Figure 2 of Creating Box Plots with Outliers.
Click on the Edit button on the left side of the dialog box to edit the Series1 series (i.e. the only series created thus far). The dialog box in Figure 2 now appears. Change the Series values: field as shown in the figure, namely a series of zeros separated by commas, one zero for each of the three groups of data.
Figure 2 – Dot Plot (step 2)
After clicking on the OK button on this dialog box and on the Select Data Source dialog box that reappears, the result will be that vertical bars on the chart in Figure 1 will disappear (actually their values will be set to zero).
Step 3: Next add a column with all 1’s (column D), a column with all 2’s (column E) and a column with all 3’s (column F) since we have three groups. The result is shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3 – Dot Plot (step 3)
Step 4: We now click on the chart and select Design > Data|Select Data. This will again bring up a dialog box similar to that shown in Figure 2 of Creating Box Plots with Outliers. This time we click on the Add button, and when a dialog box similar to that shown in Figure 2 appears, we click on the Series Name field and then select cell A3 and then insert the value 1 in the Change the Series values: field (actually we can put almost any values in these fields; the important thing is to add a series with only one element).
Step 5: We next need to change this added series to a scatter chart. This is done by right-clicking on the newly added series and selecting Change Series Chart Type… This brings up the dialog box shown in Figure 4.
Figure 4 – Dot Plot (step 5)
Change the chart type for Brand A from Clustered Column to Scatter and click on the OK button. This will replace the column bar for Brand A by a dot at 1 on the vertical axis.
Step 6: We again click on the chart and select Design > Data|Select Data. This will again bring up a dialog box similar to that shown in Figure 2 of Creating Box Plots with Outliers. This time we click on the Brand A series and then click on the Edit button. We fill in the dialog box that appears, as shown in Figure 5 and click on the OK button.
Figure 5 – Dot Plot (step 6)
Step 7: In step 6 we modified the data for the first series (after we reclassified it as a scatter plot in step 5. This time we simply add a new series (since it will automatically be considered to be a scatter plot type. Since the Select Data Source dialog box is now displayed (i.e. the dialog box similar to that shown in Figure 2 of Creating Box Plots with Outliers, just need to click on the Add button.
We now fill in the dialog box that appears with the information for Brand B, as shown on the right side of Figure 6.
Figure 6 – Dot Plot (step 7)
Finally, we repeat step 7 for Brand C and add a chart title to obtain the final result, as shown in Figure 7.
I have created one of the sample data item-wise sales numbers for five months; below is the sample data of the same. We will create a Dot Plot for this excel data. Follow the below steps:
Follow the below steps:
- Enter numbers 1, 2, and 3 in the next columns of the data. Refer below image.
Below is for Item 2.
Below is for Item 3.
Now we will have a “Dot Plot” chart ready like the below one.
As we can see, instead of the traditional “Column Bar” chart, we have a “Dot Plot” chart.
Things to Remember
- There is no built-in dot plot chart in excel.
- We need a combination of the scattered chart to create a dot plot chart.
- We can increase the size of the dots in case if required under the format data series section.
- If you need a horizontal dot plot chart, then we need to insert a bar chart in excelInsert A Bar Chart In ExcelBar charts in excel are helpful in the representation of the single data on the horizontal bar, with categories displayed on the Y-axis and values on the X-axis. To create a bar chart, we need at least two independent and dependent variables.read more instead of the column chart.

It is said and scientifically proved that; the human brain is better in manipulating and interpreting dots relationships than the lines. Therefore, it is said that dot plots can be easier to understand than conventional bar charts or histograms. Dot plot allows viewing the relationship between two points more precisely than the bar charts as well as it is flexible in nature. It can easily be read as well, which comprises a better understanding to the user. Though there is no direct inclusion of dot plots under excel and its different versions, you still can have it done under Microsoft Excel with some amendments under conventional bar charts.

What is a Dot Plot?
A dot plot is the same as that of a bar plot; however, the only difference is the chart will have dots associated with data points in contradiction of column bars present under the bar chart. In this chart, the data points/series values are plotted as dots which are placed across different categories. These categories are usually plotted on X-axis.
In this article, we will see how we can create the dot chart in excel. Though we have conventional scatter plots added under Excel, those can not be considered as dot plots.
Example of Dot Plots in Excel
Suppose we have month-wise sales values for four different years, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, respectively. We wanted to draw a dot plot based on this mentioned data.
We will be first inserting a 2-D Column bar chart on the first two rows of this data present. i.e. we will be inserting a graph on cells B1:E2. Follow the below step to insert a column chart based on the first two rows.
Step 1: Navigate to the Insert tab on the Excel ribbon and move towards the Charts section. There, click on Insert Column or Bar Chart dropdown bar and select Clustered Column chart under 2-D Column Chart section.

You’ll be able to see a graph, as shown in the screenshot below.
As we wanted to create a chart with dots, it is mandatory to remove all these bars for every year values. We can’t remove the bars series directly; otherwise, our dot chart will get affected. Therefore, we will set the series values for these bars as zero so that they are not visible under the chart. Follow the below step to do so.
Step 2: Right-click on the chart area and click on the Select Data option. It will open up a Select Data Source window where you can change the data source for Y-axis values, a.k.a. Legend Entries (Series) as well as X-axis categories, a.k.a. Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels.
Step 3: Click on the Edit button under Legend Entries (Series) option; you’ll be able to see all the values we have selected previously while creating the chart.
Step 4: Under Series values: option inside Edit Series, change the values to 0,0,0,0 for all four columns. This, as discussed above, will negate the column bars appearing on the chart.
Once you press on OK twice after setting the series values to zero, you’ll be able to see no column bars in the chart. See the screenshot below.
Now, we are going to update this chart into a dot chart with the combination of column chart & scatter chart. However, we need to decide spacing for four years of data as it is mandatory while we create the dot chart. This spacing is nothing but the distance in units, allowing the dot chart to separate from each other. I will choose spacings as 1, 2, 3, 4 for four years. This means, all the dot charts associated with four years will be at 1 unit distance from each other. This spacing can be changed as per your requirement, and it is totally up to you on how you decide this.
Step 5: Again, click on the Select Data option and choose to Click on Add button under Legend Entries (Series) to add some series values.
Step 6: Mention Series name as cell A1 (Where the year 2016 is marked) and series value as 1 under Edit Series window.
Your graph will look as shown in the screenshot below.
Step 7: Now, we are going to use the combo of scatter plot along with Bar chart. Right-click on the graph area and choose the Change Chart Type option.
Step 8: Select the Combo chart option under the Change Chart Type window and change the chart type as a scatter plot for the series added. See the screenshot below.
After hitting the OK button, you can see the chart below.
Step 9: Now, you again have to go to Select Data and click on the Edit button for series 2016 under Legend Entries (Series)
Step 10: Inside the Edit Series window, change the reference of the series name as A1 (2016); the reference for series x values should be the column of spacing with the unit as 1 (column E). Reference for series Y values as sales for the year 2016. See the screenshot below for a better understanding.
Step 11: Press the OK key two times, and you can see a graph changed to a dot plot, as shown below.
Step 12: Follow the same procedure from step 9 to step 11 for 2017, 2018 and 2019 with respective spacings as 2,3 and 4 (column F, G, and H, respectively) so that we can add the sales values for these years on the chart. The final chart layout should be like the screenshot below after adding the values for this years sales.
Note that I have changed the colors for the dot series here in the graph. You can choose your custom colors while creating one under format series options or design options.
This is how we can create dot plots in Excel. The article ends here. We will see some points to be remembered with reference to the dot plot in Excel.
Things to Remember
- There is no built-in option for Dot Plot available in any version of Microsoft Excel. However, you can create this graph with the help of a combination of a simple bar chart and scatter chart.
- Scatter Plot cannot be directly considered as Dot Plot though it has dots within.

A normal distribution graph in excel is a continuous probability function. It is a common method to find the distribution of data. A formula has been found in excel to find a normal distribution which is categorized under statistical functions. This is completely depending on the mean and standard deviation. Normal distribution returns for a specified mean and standard deviation. It is a built-in function for finding mean and standard deviation for a set of values in excel. To find the mean value, the average function is being used. The normal distribution will calculate the normal probability density function or the cumulative normal distribution function. The graphical representation of this normal distribution values in Excel is called a normal distribution graph.

How to Calculate Normal Distribution in Excel?
Below is the data are given with some student’s name and the mark obtained by them in a particular subject.
By using this, let’s try to find the normal distribution. To find the normal distribution, we need two more data that is the mean and standard deviation. To find the mean, please apply the average function.
- Here we applied the formula =AVERAGE (C2:C15) where column C consists of the marks of each student.
- You will get the mean value of the given data as below.
- The standard deviation is calculated by using the formula =STDEV(C2:C15).
- You will get the standard deviation value of the given data as below.
Now for the Normal distribution graph in excel, we have the mean and standard deviation of the given data. By using this, we can find the normal distribution.
The normal distribution function is a statistical function that helps to get a distribution of values according to a mean value. This will help to find the variation of the values among a data set. This can be calculated by using the built-in formula.
- X: Defines for which value you want to find the distribution.
- Mean: The arithmetic means value for the distribution.
- Standard_dev: The standard deviation for the distribution.
- Cumulative: This is a logical value. A true indicates a cumulative distribution function, and a false value indicates a probability mass function.
Here we will find the normal distribution in excel for each value for each mark given.

Selecting the cell F1 applied the formula =NORM.DIST(C2,$D$2,$E$2,FALSE) Here, D2 and E2 are mean, standard deviation, respectively.
- By applying the same formula for each mark, you will get the normal distribution values as below.
How to Make Normal Distribution Graph in Excel?
To make a normal distribution graph in excel is very simple and easy. Let’s understand how to make a normal distribution graph in excel with an example.
You can download this Normal Distribution Graph Excel Template here – Normal Distribution Graph Excel Template
The normal distribution values for each person’s mark has been calculated. By using the above calculations, we can plot a graph.
We can plot the normal distribution for each person’s marks. Use the below table.
For better understanding, while creating the graph, the mark column can be sorted from lowest to highest. This will result in a bell-shaped and indicates the normal distribution from the lowest to highest in the excel chart.
- The marks column will get sorted from smallest to largest. And the data looks as below.
- To make the table a normal distribution graph in excel, select the table columns Marks and Normal distribution. Go to the Insert tab and click on Recommended Charts.
- Select All Charts while inserting the chart.
- Select the X Y (Scatter), and you can select the pre-defined graphs to start quickly. You can see the built-in styles at the top of the dialog box; click on the third style, Scatter with Smooth Lines.
- Select the second chart and click on Ok.
- The data will be scattered as bell-shaped, and this shows a variation in the distribution from lowest to highest.
- We can give the name to the X and Y-axis. Click on the “+” symbol you will get extra things to make changes on the created graph, and then click on Axis Titles.
- Now the axis names are mentioned by inserting the axis title.
This is the normal distribution graph for the given data in excel. This graph makes the analysis easier. Who all are crossed the mean value or average value can be found easily.
