Notification sounds better discord
Method 5: Use Web Version
Discord.
Method 5: Update Discord and Windows
If nothing else works then this might simply be a bug in the version. This can be the case if the problem started happening after you updated Windows or Discord app.
You can try to update both Windows and Discord to check if a fix has been released. These kind of bugs are fixed in the latest updates of these applications.
Update Windows
Update Discord App
You can force the Discord App to check for an update with a press of a few buttons. Here is how to check for updates
- Open Discord App
- Make sure you focus is in the Discord app
- Hold CTRL key and press R
This will refresh the Discord app and download any available updates. You won’t notice any notifications or visual changes because lots of updates are minor with small fixes. But once you refresh the app, check if the problem is solved or not.
The Discord application may not show notifications if you are using an outdated version of it. Moreover, the wrong configuration of different settings of your system/phone (battery optimization, quiet hours, Small Taskbar buttons, etc.) may also lead to the error under discussion.
Discord Notifications Not Working
The issue arises when the user does not receive any Discord notifications (sometimes notification sound was played) whether the notification frequency is set to All Messages or Mentions Only. The issue is reported on nearly all the platforms usually after an OS or application update. Some users only encountered the issue when Discord is running in the background. In some cases, the issue was limited to some channels or private messages only.
Before moving on with the solutions to fix Discord notifications, make sure notifications for other applications are working fine. Also, restart your system/device and networking equipment. Additionally, enable/disable notifications settings of your system/phone to rule out any temporary glitch. Also, keep in mind that a server having more than 2500 users will not push notifications to the users who are not mentioned.
Clear Cache and Data of the Discord Application
Like many other applications, the Discord application uses a cache to improve the user experience and boost performance. You may encounter the error at hand if the cache of the Discord application is corrupt. In this context, clearing the cache and data of the Discord application may solve the problem. For illustration, we will discuss how to clear the Android version of the Discord application’s cache and data. You may have to re-login the application, so keep the credentials safe.
- Open your Android phone’s Settings and select Application Manager/Apps.
- Now select Discord and then tap on the Force Close button.
- Then confirm to force close the application and open the Storage option. Open Storage Settings of Discord
- Now tap on the Clear Cache button and then tap on the Clear Data button. Clear Cache and Data of Discord
- Then confirm to clear the data and restart your phone.
- Upon restart, check if the Discord application is clear of the error.
Method 2: Set as Default Communication Device
Setting your audio device as the default device is necessary but it should also be set as the default communication device. These settings are available on Windows and not from the Discord so most people overlook this. So, make sure that your audio device is the default device as well as the default communication device.
Follow the steps given below to set your audio device as the default device and communication device.
- Right-click the sound icon from the icon tray (right bottom corner)
- Select Playback Devices. This should open up the Sound option with the Playback tab selected
- Locate and right-clickyour audio device (speaker or headphones) and select Set as Default Device. Right-clickyour audio device (speaker or headphones) again and select Set as Default Communication Device. Once done, there should be a green tick mark beside your audio device. Note: If you can’t see your audio device (speaker or headphones) in the list then do the following
- Right-click on an empty place within the Select a recording device below to modify its settings: area and check the options View Disabled Devices and View Disconnected Devices. If you don’t see a Tick mark beside these options then simply click the option and it should turn this option on.
- Once done, you should be able to see the audio device (speaker or headphones) on the list. Right-click the audio device (speaker or headphones) option and select Enable
- Now repeat step 3
You should be good to go once your device is selected as the default device and default communication device. If not, then try selecting your Laptop internal mic as the microphone because if you don’t have any other microphone device installed, that is the way to go.

Want to add that I'm still having issues with this too since Discord updated a month ago.
For me it overlaps the custom sound and Discord sound for all notifs except regular server notifs, which ONLY play the default sound.
If I turn notif sounds off in the regular Discord settings I will still hear the custom sounds for pings and DMs (without the default sound overlapping) but won't hear anything for regular server notifs.I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin.
Edit: Okay I uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin, didn't fix it. I tried readding the sounds under a different category, didn't fix it. I repaired BetterDiscord, didn't fix it. I completely uninstalled Discord and reinstalled it and reinstalled BetterDiscord, didn't fix it.
I'm using Windows 10, not sure if that helps. This bug is really irritating so I hope a fix can be found soon as I really dislike Discord's default notif sound, and since I can't get the server notif to play the custom sound at all it's worse since those are the notifs I get the most on Discord.
Reset Your Device/System to the Factory Defaults
If none of the solutions could solve your issue, then the issue could be a result of the corrupt firmware/OS of your device/system. In this case, resetting your device/system to the factory defaults may solve the problem. Before proceeding, do not forget to create a backup of the essential data.

- Click on the server to opens server settings.
- Click on “Overview” and then select the “Server Region” dropdown. Changing Server Region
- From here, select a different region.

Disable Battery Optimization for the Discord Application
Battery optimization is quite a handy feature in extending the battery time of your phone. The Discord notifications may not work if battery optimization is closing the Discord application (when operating in the background). In this context, exempting the Discord application from your phone’s battery optimization may solve the problem. For illustration, we will discuss how to exempt Discord in the battery optimization of an Android phone.
Completely Close the PC Client of Discord
The Discord application has a known bug in which you will not receive notifications on your phone if you are signed in and using Discord’s PC client. The same bug could be the reason behind the current issue. In this scenario, closing out the PC client of Discord may solve the problem.
Discord
Change Your Discord Status to Online
You may not receive notifications in the Discord application if your Discord status is not set to Online. In this context, setting your Discord status to online may solve the problem.
- Launch the Discord application and click on the user avatar (near the lower-left corner).
- In the status picker, change your status to Online and then check if Discord is clear of the error. Set Your Discord Status to Online
Try with Another Discord Account
If there is a communication glitch between your device & the Discord server and due to that glitch, the Discord server may have blocked your account temporarily. This can be confirmed by using another account to login to the Discord application.
- Launch Discord and tap on the Settings/Gear icon (just beside your user name).
- Now, near the bottom of the menu, click on Log Out and then confirm to log out of Discord. Logout of Discord
- Then, restart your phone and, upon restart, launch Discord.
- Now log in using another Discord account and check if the issue is resolved.
Method 7: Changing Discord’s Volume through Volume Mixer
The Volume Mixer in Windows 10 allows exclusive control of all application’s individual volumes. You can easily lower or increase the volume of specific applications allowing greater control of your voice output. However, there are numerous instances where the individual volume of Discord was so low that the application didn’t output any voice at all.
- Press Windows + S, type Volume Mixer in the dialogue box, and open the Settings application.
- Now, you will see all the active applications on your computer. Select Discord and increase its volume to the fullest. Volume MIxer – Windows
- Save changes and exit. Re-launch Discord and see if the issue is resolved.

Method 3: Turn on and Turn off Streamer Mode
If the method 2 didn’t work for you then this method might work. If you haven’t tried method 2 then kindly perform the steps given in method 2 before trying this method.
This isn’t really a solution but kind of a workaround. A lot of users noticed that turning on the Streamer Mode, saving the option and then turning the Streamer Mode off fixes the issue. Here are the complete steps for this method.
Note: If you don’t know what exactly is a Streamer Mode or what does this mode have to do with notifications then kindly go to method 2 for detailed explanation
- Open Discord app
- Click on the User Settings. These settings should be on the bottom left and on the right side of your avatar. It should be a gear symbol
- Check if the Enable Streamer Mode option is on or off. This option should be off for you (if you followed the instructions in method 2).
- Turn on the Enable Streamer Mode option
- Now click the close (cross) button on the top right corner
- Now you have to turn this option off.
- Click on the User Settings. These settings should be on the bottom left and on the right side of your avatar. It should be a gear symbol
- Now click the close (cross) button on the top right corner
This should fix the issue for you. If the issue still persists then do the following
- Click on the User Settings. These settings should be on the bottom left and on the right side of your avatar. It should be a gear symbol
- Now click the close (cross) button on the top right corner
- Now you have to turn this option off.
- Click on the User Settings. These settings should be on the bottom left and on the right side of your avatar. It should be a gear symbol
- Now click the close (cross) button on the top right corner
Check if the problem is solved or not.

Discord is a VOIP app that was mainly designed for gaming communities but it’s used by almost everyone these days. During the usage of Discord app, you might notice that you aren’t hearing the notification sounds. This can lead to a lot of communication problem since a lot of people keep the discord app open in the background. With this issue, you won’t be able to hear the discord messages sound even if you have that sound enabled. The main problem is with the direct message notification sound but you might experience issues with other sounds like tag sounds or the notification sound for when someone joins your channel etc. There are also cases where a user wouldn’t hear anything at all from the app.
There are plenty of things that can cause this issue. The most common issue is either the wrong settings i.e. you have the sound (or some other) settings turned off or you might have a faulty discord version installed on your system. This is pretty common that a latest update for the app introduces a bug. But, these kind of bugs are usually resolved with the next update. Another thing that might cause this are the audio drivers. Lastly, although rare but not completely impossible, is the Windows Update causing this issue. Sometimes, Windows Updates introduces a bug that causes apps to misbehave.
There are plenty of solutions available depending on what’s causing the issue. So, try each of the methods given below to see which one works for you.
Method 1: Set Output Device
Sometimes the issue might simply be with your output device. If you aren’t hearing any or most of the sounds from Discord then the Discord settings might be set towards a different output device. So, simply changing the settings to use your output device will solve this issue.
Here are the steps for setting your Discord app settings
- Open Discord app
- Click on the User Settings. These settings should be on the bottom left and on the right side of your avatar. It should be a gear symbol
- Select your output device from the drop down menu in Output. You can select your device or you can select the Default device from the menu.
- Now click the close (cross) button on the top right corner
You should be good to go once the settings are changed
Windows
Try Another Network
ISPs apply different methods and protocols to control web traffic and safeguard their users from online threats. In this process, they tend to block resources essential for Discord’s operation (a common issue for chatting, streaming, and online games). In this case, trying another network may solve the notifications problem.
- Exit the Discord application and force close it (as discussed in solution 3).
- Disconnect your system/phone from the current network. Now join the system/phone to another network. You can also try a VPN
- Then check if the Discord application is clear of the error.

Allow All the Permissions Required by the Discord Application
The Discord application may not show notifications if the permissions required by it are not enabled. In this context, enabling the permissions required by the Discord application may solve the problem. For illustration, we will discuss the process of an Android phone.
If the issue is still there, try to use a different platform for the Discord application (e.g., the issue is on an Android phone, then try to use the web version) until the issue is resolved. You can also revert to an older version of Discord (Warning: Set up files acquired through 3 rd parties may expose your system/phone and data to threats like viruses, trojans, etc.). If you are using a custom ROM, then make sure you have Google Services installed with it. If you are using Windows 7, then try to enable Windows Aero. If you are still having issues, try to mute/unmute the problematic channel or block/unblock a Discord contact.
Method 3: Use Proper Sound Output/Input
Sometimes the issue might simply be because of an incorrect audio device selected in the Discord. Simply select the right one or the default one should resolve the issue.
Follow the steps given below to check and select the appropriate audio device
- Open Discord
- Click on the User Settings (gear icon). This should be on the right side of your avatar.
- You should see Output and Input on the top (right pane)
- Click on the drop-down menu under these options and select the correct audio device. If you aren’t sure which one to select then simply select the first one, close the settings by clicking the Esc button, and checking whether it works or not. You can try different devices from the drop-down and check which one works for you.
Method 4: Change Server Settings
If you are experiencing the sound problem since the installation of the Discord app then the problem might be with the server settings. The standard option in the settings is to get the sound whenever someone mentions you. So, if you want to get notifications whenever a message is sent then you will have to change the settings a little bit.
Here are the steps for changing the sound settings of the server
- Open Discord app
- Right click on the server icon from the left pane. This should be the server you are experiencing problems with. If you want to get the message sounds from all server then you will have to repeat these steps for every server
- Select Notification Settings from the menu
- Select the option All Messages from the Server Notification Settings
- Click Done
Repeat the steps given above for all the servers if you want to get sound notifications from all of your servers. Once done, you should hear all the sounds.

Method 4: Refresh Discord
If nothing else worked then it might be because of a bug or software update. Discord releases a lot of updates and it usually doesn’t take long to download and install the updates. So, you might not have noticed but your Discord might have been updated and this problem might be caused by a bug or problem. In these cases, Discord usually rolls back the update which resolves the issue or releases a new fix. So, refreshing the Discord will trigger the update and, therefore, solve the issue.
Simply close the Discord and reopen it or press CTRL + R to refresh the Discord.
Windows

Method 2: Turn off Streamer Mode
There is an option named Streamer Mode in the Discord app. This option is mainly for the streamers or when people are streaming. This option is designed to hie personal information of the streamers so it has the options like disable sound, disable notifications, hide info etc. So, if you have that mode enabled then you wouldn’t hear the notifications or sounds from the Discord app as well. If that mode is enabled, simply disabling the streamer mode will fix the issue.
Note: You don’t have to turn on the streamer mode manually. A lot of people will ignore this option thinking that they never really turned on the streamer mode so it cant be this option. However, what most people don’t know is that streamer mode automatically enables/turns on when the app detects you’re running OBS/XSplit. So, even if you didn’t turn this option on manually, it is advised to check this option.
Here are the steps for checking and changing streamer mode option in Discord app
- Open Discord app
- Click on the User Settings. These settings should be on the bottom left and on the right side of your avatar. It should be a gear symbol
- Check if the Enable Streamer Mode option is on or off. If it is on, toggle the option Enable Streamer Mode off.
- Now click the close (cross) button on the top right corner
Once done, your sound should be fine.

Mac
After resetting your phone/system, check if the Discord notifications issue is resolved.
Discord is a VoIP application that is used heavily by gamers and non-gamers alike. Since Discord allows people to do voice chats, sometimes, you might experience that you can’t hear people while using Discord. Other users will be able to hear you clearly, though. You might not hear a specific person or a set of people or you might not hear anyone at all. You might also see the green rings which indicate that the sound is coming as well.
Discord
The reason behind this issue is usually improper audio settings or your audio device not being selected as the default device. In some cases, the issue might be caused by a Discord update or a bug in the Discord app. Most of these reasons can be eliminated within a few minutes so you don’t have to worry. Simply follow the methods given below and keep going until the problem is resolved.
Disable Quiet Hours in the Action Center
Windows has a handy function that allows users to disable notifications during the quiet hours of your system, and if the said setting is enabled, you may encounter the error at hand. In this scenario, disabling quiet hours of your system may solve the problem.
- Exit Discord and make sure no Discord related process is running in the Task Manager of your system.
- Then, right-click on the Start button, and in the menu shown, click on the Gear/Settings icon. Open Windows Settings
- Now select System and then in the left pane of the window, click on Focus Assist. Click on System in Settings
- Then, in the window’s right pane, allow all the notifications by selecting Off (under Focus Assist).
- Now, under Automatic Rules, disable all the options. Disable Focus Assistant and its Automatic Rules
- Then, launch Discord and check if it is working normally.
- If not, set up an alarm, and when the alarm rings, check if the Discord notifications are working fine.
Windows
