To the original question: Not much so far.
You have the performance improvements as mentioned and cause for that is probably the fact that the game will now make use of all your CPU's threads, at least it does so for mine. So it finally makes proper use of multi-core CPUs.
The main visual effect of DX11 will probably lay in future updates, because much of its potential will only come to light if not only the engine will be updated, but the actual textures and effects. So far all they did was to make it run on DX11, but not make full use of it's functionality.
Basically looks still the same, but is smoother. Once the graphics and effects get updated aswell, we may expect even more performance improvements, at least on lower settings, all depending on what functions they will or will not make use of.
As we make 2 steps DX11 will possibly allow these among other features (personal selection):
- Faster general rendering
- Shader Model 4
- Shader model 4.1
- Shader Model 5
- Support for Tessellation
- Multithreaded rendering (as mentioned)
- Mandatory support for 4x MSAA for all render targets and 8x MSAA for all render target formats except R32G32B32A32 formats
- Compute shaders — which exposes the shader pipeline for non-graphical tasks such as stream processing and physics acceleration, similar in spirit to what OpenCL, Nvidia CUDA, ATI Stream, and HLSL Shader Model 5 achieve among others.
- Texture arrays enable swapping of textures in GPU without CPU intervention
- This enables rapid occlusion culling, which prevents objects from being rendered if it is not visible or too far to be visible. (softer pyramids = objects suddenly popping into view will be reduced)
- Instancing 2.0 support, allowing multiple instances of similar meshes, such as armies, or grass or trees, to be rendered in a single draw call, reducing the processing time needed for multiple similar objects to that of a single one
Also possible is real HDR color support.
To get an overview yourself check the Wikipedia Article on Direct3D. Lists many of the features that come with every individual version. DirectX includes some more features linked to other drivers such as sound. I do not know if DX9 actually prevented them from making some sounds better. I remember them saying that DX11 will bring many changes to the sound system, also allowing them to finally have us open windows etc.

The engine does not support Hyper Threading. If I understand you correctly with the new up dates and DX11 will implement all cores on a CPU "Not Hyper Threading" with Core Parking in the O.S. Enabled? Core Parking Disabled O.S. 7 64 Bit all cores with ATS v1.34+. Process Explorer. I7 4930K
Thank You for your long explanation very detailed.
Have A Great Day

I am not sure what you want to know.
Windows 7 is a sperate case anyway. If you haven't I strongly suggest you upgrade to Windows 10. On the SCS forums I repeatedly read it's still possible for free. For a full DX support you will have to move on from Win7. It's not going to be supported much longer anyway.
Many have reported that ATS and ETS 1.35 experimental will reset to DX9 on Win7.
I can definately confirm what many others have observed though: Suddenly all my cores get a lot more CPU time, while on 1.34 it was only one core that was running hot. May be that many instances run still on one core only, but appearently lot of the graphics talk is spread across. DX is designed for that particular task, to distribute tasks across your various components, beside of course allowing new functionality.
Im on a Ryzen 5 2600 on Windows10 64bit.
Note: DX11 will remain experimental even through ver 1.35. They will publish a stable release later this year, hopefull together with the Road to the Black Sea expansion for ETS.

Which are you running and why?
I just got the game and am experimenting. I have everything maxxed out, resolution at 1920x1080.
I have an HD7870 2GB Ghz running stock clocks for this game because it runs so smooth.
So, point being, DirectX uses more GPU load (75%) and uses 35% of my C2Q. It plays 100% smooth.
OpenGL uses 25% max cpu and around 35% GPU. It gets lower fps.
I know AMD/ATI usually are coded better for DirectX, and Nvidia for OpenGL, but I didn't want to be missing something.
They tend to look the same, but I haven't tested and played long enough.
What's your thoughts so far?

SCS mentioned a while ago the OpenGL is a backup way of DX9

OpenGL is so the game works on Linux and OSX. It can still work on Windows and with some cards will get better performance.
Dont listen to the people saying if on Windows use DX9, cause that isn't always the case. If your getting bad framerate, try OpenGL.

Direct X for windows, Open GL for Mac and Linux, it just gives a better way to be compatible for platforms

don't know about all of you but opengl gives me 50fps with all settings at max and scaling at 300% directx I get 60fps min and up to 125 max with the same settings. I'm running a GTX 980 with a i7 6 core cpu. opengl is crap on a nvidia gpu

The game is coded on DirectX . OpenGL is for ATI useer's and Mac . If you are running Nvidia you want DX . If dont use it you lose alot of rendering .

I get better frames on Nvidia with the OpenGL renderer. *shrug*
It's worth trying both. Some configs will work better with the other. OpenGL makes better use of my hardware in this case; probably newer and/or better maintained than the old DX9 code.

You've got that backwards.
Just a general rule of thumb for performance:
Nvidia = OpenGL
ATI/AMD = DirectX
Been that way for almost 2 decades.

Thats wrong, nVidia is heavy in to DX. In fact my GTX 970 crashes the game if I use OpenGL with some of the mods that I have installed for some reason. DX9 runs at 60fps will everything turned to max settings. AMD has always been good with OpenGL, hence why their Fire line was super huge sellers for the 3d Cad programs like Solidworks, etc as they use OpenGL.
Of coarse there is now a shift, as nVidias tricks to get their drivers to use multicore isn't working as well as AMD cards do with DX12..

No I have it right . It was not till recently were ATI statrted better DX suport . It is known in the industry that DirectX best suport is Nvidia with ATI now just on Par . I do not know were you get a decade this has changed but trust me it has been only since DX12 this has changed . Also DX12 is a long way off for most games .

It's not "wrong", it just doesn't apply now.
NVidia has historically had better drivers for Opengl than ATI(AMD). But they both did fine.
The big thing is the Operating system. If you run Windows, Direct X will generally give better performance than Opengl, if the game supports both..
If you don't run Windows, you have no option but Opengl, since Direct X is Windows only.
Opengl was put into the game because it's a multiplatform game, they had to have something to render in Linux/Mac operating systems..
