Where Does DaVinci Resolve Save Proxy Files
You can either access the proxy files location or choose your own by clicking on “Browse” button against “Proxy generation location” which can be found under “Project Settings -> Master Settings -> Working Folders -> Proxy generation location“.
This is a new feature in Davinci Resolve 17.
How do I Move or Export DaVinci Resolve Files?
Exporting DaVinci Resolve Files (Databases, Files, Timelines) is easy. Before exporting, you must know the below things:
- Do you need to export only the project file? Or
- Do you need to export the entire project with media files? Or
- Do you need to export the database (which is a collection of all of your project files)? Or
- Do you need to export only one timeline inside of a project?
Let’s delve into each of the above scenario.
How to Import a DaVinci Resolve Project?
- Go to the “Project Manager” window (either by launching Resolve or clicking on house icon from the bottom right hand corner).
- Right click on the empty area or grey space.
- Click on “Import Project“.
- Select your project file with “.drp” extension.
- Click on “Open“.
- There you go!
After opening the project, if you see that the clips display “Media Offline”, then select all the clips, right click on any one clip, select “Relink Selected Clips” and choose the desired folder which has your media files.
- Отлично справляется с синхронизацией различных источников;
- Независимость от платформы, возможность работать над проектами на Mac или ПК, регулярные обновления для новых кодеков и камер;
- Вы можете редактировать практически любой формат, не беспокоясь о совместимости;
How to Export a DaVinci Resolve Project?
If you need to export only the project file, then “Export Project” option is enough.
- Go to “File” -> “Export Project” (If you’re already inside a project).
- Choose your desired location.
- Click on “Save“.
- It will save the project file as “.drp” extension – which means “DaVinci Resolve Project” file.
If you’re in “Project Manager” window, then right click on your desired project and click on “Export“. And follow the same steps as above.
The “.drp” file doesn’t include your source media files. The size of a .drp file will be comparatively less compared to your huge media files, say around few MBs for a large project and less than 1 MB for a small project.
If you are sure you just need to share the drp file to a colorist, and he/she has media files, then it’s a matter of importing the project file (.drp) and relinking the media clips in the timeline.
How to Archive DaVinci Resolve Project Including the Media Files?
If you know you need to export only one project along with all the media files, then you should use “Export Project Archive” option.
- Go to “Project Manager” (either by launching Resolve or clicking on house icon from the bottom right hand corner).
- Right click on your project and click on “Export Project Archive“.
- Choose your location.
- Click on “Save”.
- You’ll get a window to check options for “Media Files”, “Render Cache”, “Proxy Media” ,etc,. Check your desired options.
- Click on “Ok“.
- It will save the folder with the extension “.dra” – DaVinci Resolve Archive.
Now you can move this folder – which has the project file, media files, cache files, proxy files, etc, – to another computer and do a restoration.
Resolve will automatically import the “.drp” project and relink the media files, which will save you a lot of time.
How to Find DaVinci Resolve Project Files?
After when you click on “Open File Location“, you’ll get the file path (also called the DaVinci Resolve database location) based on your OS.
Where Does DaVinci Resolve Save Projects?
DaVinci Resolve saves project files on:
- Windows = C:/Users//AppData/Roaming/BlackMagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Support/Resolve Disk Database
- Mac = Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Resolve Disk Database
Double click on “Resolve Projects” and go further till you find folders which are named after your projects.
Typically, this will be the path – “/Resolve Projects/Users/guest/Projects”.
(If you’re not able to locate “AppData” folder, then it could be hidden. In your Windows File Explorer, check the box “Hidden Items” under ” View ” tab in the taskbar).
Inside Resolve, when you click on “File -> Save Project As“, this is the same location where your project file will be saved – C:/Users//AppData/Roaming/BlackMagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Support/Resolve Disk Database/Resolve Projects/Users/guest/Projects.
(Note: And when you double click on any project folder, you’ll find “Project.db” file, which is your actual project database file.)
So there you go!
Restoring Project Backups in DaVinci Resolve
(Prevention is better than cure).
Taking regular project backups is the best solution.
Resolve offers live save and regular project backups to secure your precious work.
What is a DaVinci Resolve “Project.db” Database File?
“Project.db” is a DaVinci Resolve database file which contains your project’s post production works like your timelines, edits, markers, etc,. Each project that you work on will have its own project.db file.
If you’re unable to load current project because of a crash, then the best way is to restore your project.db file.
If your hard disk crashes or you accidentally delete your project folders which contain the project.db file, then follow the below steps.
Where Does DaVinci Resolve Save Media
Saving source media files is up to you to decide. So the directory is the location of your choice.
But keep in mind that, if you have an internal SSD, try to save your media files over there for faster post-production work.
Conclusion
As per Blackmagic Design, DaVinci Resolve follows the concept of database for project management.
A database is nothing but a collection of all of your projects.
By default, Resolve uses disk-database, which is nothing but a folder on your hard disk, whose location can be found out by right-clicking the local database and clicking on Open File Location.
So once you know the location of your project files or database, you can then import, export your project files, save your project files in the location of your choice, etc,.
If you’d like to know how to move your project from one database to another, how to export your project, archive and restore it, how to move projects between computers, etc – you’re at the right place.
In fact, you’ll learn how to deal with your databases, projects, and timelines efficiently.
Let’s dive right in.
It is an excellent practice to create multiple databases to group your similar projects together for an efficient workflow and backups.
Which naturally leads us to…
How to Recover DaVinci Resolve Deleted Projects?
- Recover lost data using data recovery softwares like EaseUS, Recuva, etc,.
- Go to EaseUs – data recovery software.
- Hover over “Data Recovery” and select your OS.
- Click on “Data Recovery Wizard Free” or Pro and download.
- Install the software. Launch it.
- Select your location (the location where the project.db might live).
- Then start “Scan“. It might take some time.
- After the scanning is done, search for your file in the search box.
- It should display your lost file.
- Click on “Recover” and select your desired location.
- You got your file back!
- Sometimes the file might be named – “Project.db.202007260124”.
- Remove the numbers after .db (those numbers represent year, date, time)
- Make it into “Project.db”
So now your project.db file is “recovered“.
The next step is…
Resolve Studio.
How to Restore Recovered Project File into DaVinci Resolve?
- Place the project.db file in your default database location, inside a new folder (which should be renamed to your project name).
- For Windows, create a new folder inside “C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\Support\Resolve Disk Database\Resolve Projects\Users\guest\Projects” and save the file over there.
- For MacOS, create a new folder inside “Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/Resolve Disk Database/Resolve Projects/Users/guest/Projects” and save the file over there.
- Launch DaVinci Resolve and access the newly created project from the project manager.
- If your project is not displayed, then right click and “Refresh“.
- The Project Manager should display your recovered project.
If, for some reasons, the project folder is still not displayed, then try to create a new database and place the db file over there.
DaVinci Resolve?

It could be a frustrating experience for those who are new to Resolve, trying to find out the project files location.
Especially the frustration mounts up when you try to “Save As” your project, expecting Resolve will ask you to choose your destination folder…
Follow these 3 steps to quickly locate your project files in the computer (assuming DaVinci Resolve is already launched).
How to Export a Timeline from DaVinci Resolve?
There will be situations when you might need to export a single timeline and take it to other computers. Project archiving will copy all the timelines and the related media – which is something you don’t want.
You want a particular timeline, and its related assets that you want copied. Then,
No one can predict the crash of your system or hard drive or DaVinci Resolve.
But once you are hit, it frustrates and de-motivates a lot.
Sometimes a week’s work or hours’ work is lost, which is very painful.
Today, I will show you…
How to restore or recover your crashed/deleted/lost project in DaVinci Resolve.
In fact, your TIME and EFFORT are very important, which should NOT be wasted!
Without any delay…
Let’s dive right into it.
DaVinci Resolve.

How to Move / Export DaVinci Resolve Files?
When it comes to DaVinci Resolve, you can export the below based on your needs:
- Only the Project file.
- Entire project with media files.
- The entire database (which is a collection of all of your project files).
- Only one timeline inside of a project.
If you’re interested in the above, then click on the below post for detailed and step by step instruction:
How to Create a New Database in DaVinci Resolve?
- Go to “Project Manager” (either by launching Resolve or clicking on house icon from the bottom right-hand corner)
- Click on the “Show/Hide Databases” icon.
- Click on “New Database“.
- Click on “Create“
- Let the “Type” be “Disk” – Default value.
- Enter a proper name with no spaces.
- Choose a location of your choice which should be empty or create a new folder. Otherwise you might get an error message saying – “Specify empty folder. Please create an empty folder for the new database”.
- Click on “Create“.
- The new database will be displayed below your local database.
How to Restore an Archived Project in DaVinci Resolve?
- Go to “Project Manager” (either by launching Resolve or clicking on house icon from the bottom right-hand corner).
- Right click on the empty area or grey space.
- Click on “Restore Project Archive“.
- Select your archived folder with “.dra” extension.
- Click on “Open“.
You’ll have your project restored.
How to Move Your DaVinci Resolve Projects Between Computers?
You could have various reasons to move your projects between computers:
- You have your project files on your desktop, but need to work from a laptop because you’re travelling.
- You might need to hand-off your project works to another person, say, a colorist or vfx specialist.
- You’re going to upgrade to a new system, so that is where you’ll be working from now on.
If these are the cases, then the next thing you should decide is whether you want to export a single project or a collection of all projects within a database.
How to Move a Project From One Database to Another?
Now, let us suppose, you have many databases – each having many projects.
- Go to “Project Manager” (either by launching Resolve or clicking on house icon from the bottom right-hand corner)
- Click on the “Show/Hide Databases” icon.
- Select your database, which has your project.
- Then select and copy (“Ctrl + C” or “Cmd + C”) your project.
- Click on the desired database and paste it (“Ctrl + V” or “Cmd + V”).
- The project should now reflect in the desired database.
Studio?
How to Move DaVinci Resolve Database to Another Computer?
If you want all the projects and all the databases with all the media files, then you must copy all the databases folders and all the media files separately. This is how you do.
- Go to “Project Manager” (either by launching Resolve or clicking on house icon from the bottom right-hand corner).
- Click on the “Show/Hide Databases” icon.
- You have to select your database one by one and right click -> select “Open File Location”.
- Now copy the folder “Resolve Projects” and go to your external hard-drive, create a new folder and paste it there. (Always keep in mind that you should paste “Resolve Projects” inside another empty folder.)
- Now do the same to other databases (that is, “open file location” -> copy “Resolve Projects” -> paste inside an empty folder in your hard drive.)
- Now copy all of your media files to your hard drive.
So now all the media files and databases are copied. Next step is to go to your new computer and connect your database.
How to Connect DaVinci Resolve Database?
- Launch DaVinci Resolve.
- In the “Project Manager” window, click on “New Database“.
- Click on “Connect“.
- Let the “Type” be “Disk” – Default value.
- Enter a proper name with no spaces.
- Choose the same folder that has your database which was copied in the earlier steps. (Remember to choose the folder that you created which has the “Resolve Projects”)
- Click on “Add“.
- The new database will be imported and displayed below your local database.
- Now go to any project inside that database and select all the clips inside Media Pool and “Relink Selected Clips” with your media files to avoid “Media Offline” error message.
- Now do the same to other databases.
- Now you should have all the databases and media files that you need in the new computer.
How to Move a Timeline from one Project To Another?
Sometimes you might need a timeline (which is part of one project) in another project within the same database. In that case,
- Open existing project, which has your timeline.
- Locate the timeline in the Media pool.
- Copy it using “Ctrl + C” or “Cmd + C”.
- Go to “Project Manager” by launching clicking on house icon from the bottom right-hand corner.
- Double click your desired project to open it.
- Paste the timeline using “Ctrl + V” or “Cmd + V”.
- You’ll notice that along with the timeline, the media files are also copied (which are part of your timeline).
If you need to copy the timeline to a project which is part of another database, then you simply copy the timeline using “Ctrl + C” or “Cmd + C”, select the desired database and project from the “Project Manager” and paste it inside the media pool (of the desired project). All the media which are part of the timeline are also copied!
How to Recover DaVinci Resolve Corrupted Project File?
If Resolve crashes when you try to open the recovered project, then the project file could be CORRUPTED!
In those extreme cases, head over to Blackmagic forum and upload your project.db file in the required thread (they might ask you to upload in dropbox and then share the link).
Certain users were able to sort out their corrupted project.db files. Others couldn’t.
The BlackMagic Design support engineer should be able to help you out (most probably they get your corrupted project.db file and return your project.drp file which you then can import into Resolve).
Where does DaVinci Resolve Store Optimized Media and Cache Files
Resolve stores optimized media/rendered cache files in the first disk that you’ve defined in the “DaVinci Resolve -> Preferences -> System -> Media Storage” option:
The cache files include your optimized media and rendered cache media.
You can also view the folder by navigating to the bottom right-hand corner and click on “Project Settings -> Master Settings -> Working Folders“:
The “Cache files location” is where your optimized media/rendered cache media is stored.
By clicking on “Browse“, you can choose your own folder on your hard disk (preferably an internal SSD).
