DaVinci Resolve

Linux.

I will show you how to fix a MEDIA OFFLINE case in DaVinci Resolve 14. I was motivated to do this because I wasted an afternoon editing a video that ended up being impossible to render since it was a screen capture recorded with OBS into an MP4 Format and H.264 Codec. There were several spots in the video file that were showing «MEDIA OFFLINE» in Resolve no matter what I did to the settings and even if my raw video was playing correctly out of DaVinci. In my case, the solution is to record in MP4 / x264 codec in OBS rather than directly into H.264 which will be my final output. This way, the raw recording is perfectly working and editable in Resolve and I will finally render into H.264 when the job is done. I hope this will help some of you and that you will overcome this frustrating issue.
720p 50fps 1500 kbps.
Facing problems importing and editing MP4 files in DaVinci Resolve? Fortunately, there is an easy way to fix the issue. Let’s find it out here.
“Does Davinci Resolve 12 not import MP4 video files? – All my Bandicam recording is done to mp4, yet inside of Resolve I cannot see the video files or through windows explorer drag and drop them into Resolve. Does it not take MP4? If not, why not? Is there a list of compatible file formats?”
In fact, there is hardly anything DaVinci Resolve doesn’t support. It is completely geared towards any kind of workflow, be it cinema-based, television-based or internet-based. However, it doesn’t mean that you can import every piece of video into this world famous color corrector and amazing editor. When it comes to importing MP4 files to DaVinci Resolve, you may find that this editing program fails to recognize or sometimes may crash, which is really a great pain. If you’re having trouble editing MP4 files to a more editing-friendly format, such a Resolve’s DNxHD .mov. Resolve 12, 11, 10, etc., read on for details.
Whe MP4 files won’t work in DaVinci Resolve? The reason is that MP4 is a format container with different codecs. According to Davinci Resolve’s offcial site, Resolve does not support MP4 files, or any compressed audio file formats. To get MP4 files into DaVinci Resolve, the easy workaround is to transcode MP4 files to a more editing-friendly format, such a Resolve’s DNxHD .mov.
Actually, it’s not as difficult as you imagine. What you need is a just a common video converter like EaseFab Video Converter for Mac. It can be used a great DaVinci Resolve Video Converter which can help you transcode any MP4 videos and other MKV/MTS/MXF/AVI/MOV/H.265/FLV to DaVinci Resolve compatible videos with original quality. Besides, this software can also transcode any video files for editing in Windows Movie Maker, Avid Media Composer, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, etc NLEs.
Note: If you are running on Windows, please turn to the Windows versiion MP4 to DaVinci Resolve Video Converter (10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP, etc) . Now just download it and follow the steps below to encode your MP4 videos to DaVinci Resolve on Mac.
Converting MP4 files for Editing in DaVinci Resolve smoothly
Step 1. Add MP4 videos to the program
Start up this program as a MP4 Converter for DaVinci Resolve. When its main interface pops up, click “Add Video” button to input your source media on the main interface.
Step 2. Choose DNxHD as the output format
Click the Profile bar to open the format list. Then go to “Editing Software” and select “DNxHD” as the output format to get videos with optimized settings for DaVinci Resolve. As you see, you may see other suitable ones for other NLEs such like FCP, Premiere Pro, iMovie, etc.
Tip: If necessary, you can click “Settings” button and go to Settings panel to modify video and audio settings like video encoder, resolution, video bit rate, frame rate, aspect ratio, audio encoder, sample rate, audio bit rate, and audio channels.
Step 3. Start the conversion
When ready, click “Convert” to start format conversion. As soon as the conversion is complete, you can click “Open” button to get the exported MOV files for use in DaVinci Resolve with optimum performance. From the guide above, you may find it is so easier for us to import the MP4 files to DaVinci Resolve for editing.
Mp4 is the most widely used delivery format. And some of the smartphones and cameras shoot videos in Mp4 format.
So it becomes necessary to have a basic knowledge of how DaVinci Resolve works with Mp4 format.
Especially importing, exporting, editing, transcoding mp4, etc.
So today, we’ll see how Mp4 files are handled in DaVinci Resolve.
List out certain Mp4 format issues in Resolve and how to overcome them.
Without wasting time…
Let’s dive right into it!
DaVinci Resolve Mp4 Export
Since Mp4 is the most widely used delivery format (especially YouTube prefers Mp4), it only makes sense to export your DaVinci Resolve project to an mp4 file format.
And keep in mind that you will have to choose H.264 codec (the only codec option available in the free version of DaVinci Resolve in Windows).
For the Studio (paid) users, you can speed up your render (or export) time with the help of the “Encoder” option set to “Nvidia” or “AMD” based on your GPU. Unfortunately, the free version doesn’t have hardware acceleration for encoding.
DaVinci Resolve Mp4 Media Offline
Sometimes when you drag and drop the mp4 file into Resolve’s timeline, you might see media offline error. This means that DaVinci Resolve is not able to recognize your mp4 file.
It could be due to multiple reasons, like your video having H.265 (HEVC) codec, or your mp4 file might contain variable frame rates instead of a constant frame rate. (Please keep in mind that Resolve only recognizes constant frame rate files.)
To solve this issue, click on the below for a detailed step by step guide:
How to Export DaVinci Resolve Project to Mp4
- Click on the “Deliver” page in DaVinci Resolve.
- Click on “Custom” under “Render Settings”.
- Enter your required “Filename” and choose a location to save your project as mp4.
- Select “Single Clip” against “Render“.
- Under the “Video” tab, make sure “Export Video” is checked.
- Select “MP4” from the “Format” dropdown.
- Select “H.264” from the “Codec” dropdown.
- Choose your required “Resolution” and “Frame Rate“.
- Click on “Advanced Settings”.
- Check “Force sizing to highest quality” if you used optimized media or proxy media with a lower resolution. Checking this option will enable original high resolution footage for export.
- Click on “Add to render queue“.
- On the right hand side under “Render Queue“, click on “Render All” to start the exporting process.
- Done!
How to Import Mp4 Files into DaVinci Resolve?
- Launch DaVinci Resolve and create a new project.
- Go to the “Edit” page.
- Click on the “Media Pool” from the top left hand corner.
- Go to the menu “File” > “Import” > “Media” (shortcut for import is “Ctrl + i” or “Cmd + i”).
- Choose your mp4 files and click on “Open”.
- The mp4 files should now be imported.
- If you don’t see your mp4 files in the “Media Pool”, then there might be some issues with them. Read on to know more.
Solution for Media Offline due to H.265 (HEVC) in DaVinci Resolve
- Go to Microsoft store or type “microsoft hevc video extensions” in Google and click on the relevant result.
- Click on “Buy” button. (You’ll have to purchase it for $0.99.)
- Download and install the extension.
- Restart your PC.
- Resolve should now be able to decode the h.265 video.
Keep in mind that both the DaVinci Resolve free and Studio version support H.265 decoding, but only the Studio version supports GPU acceleration.
So, if you plan to upgrade to Studio version, working with H.265 footage should no longer be an issue.
Sometimes after importing the H.265 clips, some random frames (not the entire clip) display media offline error, during scrubbing or timeline playback.
This mostly happens to footages (4K 60 FPS) shot through smartphones like latest iPhone models.
This intersplicing media offline frames are faced by DaVinci Resolve Studio users.
Make sure you have the latest version of Resolve and updated GPU driver.
If not, then follow the below steps (keep in mind that this issue could be solved in future DaVinci Resolve updates)
How to Convert Variable Frame Rate Video into Constant Frame Rate
Note: Sometimes, the output video from handbrake could result in “Variable” framerate video, despite selecting “Constant Framerate” radio-button.
Select the nearest frame rate of your footage and start encoding again (assuming that “Constant Framerate” radio-button is selected).
This should solve the issue.
But despite doing this, if it’s still variable, then try selecting different frame rates like:
- For 30 FPS video, try selecting “29.97”, re-encode and see if it’s constant.
- If not, try selecting “30”, re-encode and see if it’s constant.
- Similarly for 60 FPS video, try with “59.97” option, etc.
- You get the idea.
Now import this new video file into Resolve.
There shouldn’t be any audio sync or media offline issues.
Next time if you have the option of shooting a video in VFR or CFR, go for the constant framerate option and save your valuable time!
Even after following the above steps, if you are still unable to fix the media offline issue, then the best possible solution is to…
Transcode your footage.
It is nothing but re-encoding your footage into other codecs like:
If you need editing friendly codecs like DNxHD, PRORES, etc, but are facing difficulty working with FFMPEG, then try either of the below steps using Handbrake:
1. Batch transcode your footages into the codec that DaVinci can decode, like H.264.
Then import the footages inside DaVinci Resolve and then go to delivery tab and export the footages into your required format and post-production friendly codec.
This will export videos that are huge in size but are easy to edit (less stress on your computer’s resources).
Go ahead and import these videos into DaVinci Resolve and start editing.
Or…
2. After importing the footages that DaVinci can decode:
Solution:
- For Studio users, go to “DaVinci Resolve” -> “Preferences” -> “System” -> “Memory and GPU” -> “GPU Configuration“
- “GPU Processing Mode” -> Instead of “CUDA” or “OpenCL”, choose “Auto“.
- Then go to “Decode Options” ->uncheck “H.264/H.265 using hardware acceleration”.
- Restart Resolve and see if it’s working.
Even though the above seems counter-intuitive, there are users who have benefitted from this checking/unchecking.
Just give it a go.
Missing clips are denoted by a question mark in the timeline.
When you accidentally delete a file from the Media Pool, then you get a missing clip in the timeline.
Can the Free Version of DaVinci Resolve Import Mp4?
DaVinci Resolve free version can definitely import Mp4 files with H.264 or H.265 (HEVC) codecs. This also means Resolve can decode Mp4 files – you can import and edit an Mp4 file in the DaVinci Resolve timeline with no issues.
Mp4 Editing Performance Issues in DaVinci Resolve
After making sure DaVinci Resolve can import your mp4 file, you start editing your footage.
You realize that Resolve is struggling to playback the footage smoothly in real-time. This is mainly due to the codecs H.264 or H.265 of your mp4 file.
Both of them are highly compressed codecs – especially H.265 is more compressed than H.264. So naturally, your CPU/GPU is under tremendous load to unpack them (decode) and process them in real-time.
The best option is to optimize the footage to a lower resolution by right-clicking your mp4 files and selecting “Generate Optimized Media“.
Then change the “Timeline Proxy Mode” to half or quarter resolution from the menu “Playback”. This will lower the burden of your GPU so that you get real-time playback.

DaVinci Resolve Mp4 No Video After Importing
If your mp4 file is not getting imported or no video is displayed, then Resolve doesn’t recognize the video codec of your mp4 file. DaVinci Resolve supports Mp4 videos of codec H.264 or H.265. The best solution is to convert (or transcode) your existing mp4 file codec to H.264 codec.
How to Transcode (Convert) Existing Mp4 file to H.264 Video Codec?
- Go to “Handbrake” website. Go to the “Download” section and select the installer file based on your OS.
- Install the setup and launch the application.
- Go to “File” -> “Open Source” -> Select your video file.
- Select the required “Preset” (Most probably you will find your required resolution under “Web” or “General” menu).
- Head over to “Video” tab -> Select “H.264(x264)” from “Video Codec”. (If your mp4 file is 10 bit and Resolve doesn’t import it, then “H.264(x264)” codec should solve the issue).
- Then select “Constant Framerate” radio-button.
- On the bottom, choose your folder location for the output and rename the file to .mp4.
- Click on “Start Encode” on the top.
You can then import this mp4 inside DaVinci Resolve with no issues.
Another effective way is to use FFMPEG – a command-line utility.
With the help of FFMPEG, you can convert any video format to Mp4, and on top of that, you can also convert any video format to editor-friendly codecs like Prores (Mac) and DNxHD (Windows).
(Keep in mind that Mp4 format with H.264/H.265 codec is not editor-friendly and puts tremendous pressure on your computer resources.)
Read the below article to know more on how FFMPEG is used to convert a wav file into mp3:
Does DaVinci Resolve Support Mp4?
DaVinci Resolve definitely supports Mp4. The “DaVinci Resolve Supported Codecs List” by BlackMagic Design clearly tells that, in Mac – Resolve can encode and decode Mp4 with H.264/H.265 codecs, in Windows – Resolve can decode Mp4 with H.264/H.265 codecs, encode H.264, but needs Studio (paid) version for encoding H.265.
Therefore, you can definitely work with Mp4 formats in the free version of Resolve!
DaVinci Resolve Mp4 No Audio After Importing
Sometimes after adding an Mp4 file into Resolve’s timeline, you can see the video, but the audio is not present.
This could be due to Resolve not being able to recognize the audio codec. The supported codecs list by BlackMagic Design reveals that an mp4 file having in-built audio can be recognized by Resolve, as long as it is of the following type:
- wav and Aiff formats with Uncompressed PCM 16 or 24 or 32 bit
- mpeg audio codec of Mp3 file with a constant bit rate.
- aac/m4a with a constant or variable bit rate
- flac file
The most common issue could be variable bit rate Mp3 audio codecs (since only a constant bit rate is supported by Resolve).
It is better to transcode the audio to a constant bit rate mp3 or, still, a better option would be aac – since Resolve can recognize the “aac” format with constant or variable bit rates.
You can open handbrake, import your mp4 file, go to the “Audio” tab, select “AAC” against the “Codec”, and encode. See if you can hear the audio in Resolve. If not, again, come back to Handbrake and select other listed codecs, encode and import into Resolve.
How to Check your Video for VFR or CFR?
Solution:
Re-import the deleted files into the media pool from your source folder.
After you import all the clips inside DaVinci Resolve, they turn offline, but the audio seems to be fine.
Sometimes the video plays with out-of-sync audio.
This is a common issue with Variable Frame Rate (VFR) footages.
Smartphones, OBS(Open Broadcaster Software), game-play recording software like NVIDIA ShadowPlay, etc, record videos in VFR format.
(To the contrary, a DSLR or mirrorless shoots constant frame rate videos.)
Please keep in mind that any editing software (NLE) like DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro will expect constant frame rate videos.
Hence it’s a good practice to convert variable framerate footages into constant framerate ones.
- You’ll have to install Mediainfo for checking the type of framerate.
- Then install Handbrake to convert VFR into CFR.
Mp4 Import Issues in DaVinci Resolve and How to Fix Them?
After importing your mp4 files, if they don’t show up, then most probably the codec of your mp4 file – either video or audio, is not supported by DaVinci Resolve.
Even if they get imported and when you drop the file into the timeline, there is either no video or audio!
We’ll see how to fix these issues.
Solution:
- Go to Media Pool
- Select all of your offline clips
- Then right-click one of the selected clips
- Choose “Relink Selected Clips”
- From the dialog box, locate your folder which contains the source footage.
- Click Ok.
If for some reason, there are clips that couldn’t be found, then DaVinci Resolve would ask for “Comprehensive Search” in a dialog box.
Clicking Search will let Resolve search the source files inside sub-folders of the selected folder.
If (for some reasons) few clips are offline, then change the parent folder and start the search again.
If unlinked clips are not your issue, then proceed to the next one.
Sometimes DaVinci Resolve shows media offline, but it’s not.
When you import all the clips inside DaVinci Resolve, they turn offline.
If you drag them into the timeline and try to play, they are still offline but you hear the audio.
This issue is related with playing back H.265 or HEVC codec footage.
The GoPros and DJI Mavics encode high resolution & faster footage (like 4K 60 FPS) into highly compressed H.265.
Even mirrorless cameras like Fujifilm XT4 and Sony A7S3 use H.265 codec:
- Sony A7S3 = XAVC HS (H.265) -> 4K 120 FPS, 4K 60 FPS, etc, in 10 bit 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 sub-sampling.
- Fuji XT3/XT4 = H.265 -> 4K 60 FPS, 4K 30 FPS, etc, in 10 bit 4:2:0 sub-sampling.
The root-cause is the inability to decode HEVC or H.265.
Actually, this is more of a Windows 10 problem.
This means it needs HEVC extensions to successfully decode H.265 footage (in DaVinci Resolve or Premiere Pro, etc.)
No Audio After Exporting to Mp4 in DaVinci Resolve?
Make sure the audio track is not muted in the timeline under the “Edit” page. Then go to the “Deliver” page, under “Render Settings”, click on the “Audio” tab. Make sure “Export Audio” is checked.
Make sure “Bus 1 (Stereo)” is selected against “Output Track 1”. (Sometimes “Timeline Track” selected resulted in no audio, as reported by certain users in the online forums).
This is a Step-by-Step guide to fix media offline issue in DaVinci Resolve.
Media Offline is shown when DaVinci Resolve is unable to read your footage successfully.
This could be due to various reasons like unlinked clips, VFR, 4K 60 FPS H.265 footage, etc.
Once you identify the root cause, the fix is easy!
(Based on your root-cause, you might need to install few tools to fix the issue – more on that later)
Let’s get started.
Unlinked clips issue can result in media offline when when your imported clips inside Resolve lose their link with the source footage placed in the hard disk.
This happens when you unknowingly move your source footage to a different folder or drive...
… especially during exporting and importing your projects to another system (laptop or desktop).
