Paints Set -
- кусачки для пластика, чтобы вырезать детали из литника;
- нож, чтобы срезать места крепления модельки;
- надфили, чтобы сравнять выступы, которые уже не срезаются ножом;
In this post, I talk about Painting New40K Space Marines. This article acts as both a second part of a review and also as a tutorial for the Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set by Games Workshop. As this is a continuation of my earlier unboxing and review of the box set, be sure to check out that post too.
For this article, I decided to paint the miniatures with just the paints in the box. Without buying anything else, you can easily paint these miniatures up to the same “Battle Ready” standard.
In some ways, the tutorial part of this post is for beginner painters. That said, if you aren’t a beginner, you may still get enjoyment out of the article. If you prefer videos, there is a video version of this post here, and embedded at the end of the article.
An image of the box and link to the the original unboxing review of this paint set on Must Contain Minis.
If you want to see exactly what is in the box, check the link to the first part of the review. If you want to see how the miniatures paint up, keep reading! Keep in mind that I will be using only the paints and colours that come in this boxed set.
Now, let’s get into it.
Step One – Prime the Miniatures
The Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set does not come with spray primer. That said, if you go to the Citadel Colour Website, then they have your answer. If you either don’t have primer, or can’t use it, they recommend that you “undercoat by hand.” This primes the model.
The box actually recommends you go to that website for painting instructions. I outlined my process here to help beginners.
To start, you use one of their base paints directly on the plastic. They recommend Abaddon Black or Corax White for the “Classic Style” of painting. Your Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set comes with both of those paint pots. The box set also steers you towards painting the figures in the Classic method.
The other way to paint them is by using their “Contrast Paints Style.” That method requires different colours to “hand base” the miniatures.
First step – Paint all the miniatures with Abaddon Black or Corax White. As a note, I tried only Abaddan Black. If you try a different colour and it beads up, remove the colour and try the black. It works well and will act as the miniatures’ primer.
Step Two – Base Coat the Figures
For the next step, I paint up the base colours. In this case, I start with blue and followed up with the gold and white. I left the black parts of the figures unpainted.
Step Two, lay down the base colour… Macragge Blue.
I followed the blue with Balthasar Gold and Corax White.
At this point, they look pretty good and years ago, I might of stopped. But… There is another step in painting New40K Space Marines.
Step Three – Apply the Shadding
At this point, we coat the entire model with Agrax Earthshade. This is a shade product that goes into the recesses of the model making the figures look like they have proper shadows.
After applying the shade, the miniatures turn out looking even better than when we started.
A picture of my Space Marines just before shading them and all of the colours that I used. All of these paints come in the Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set by Games Workshop.
The miniature after applying Agrax Earthshade.
They look fantastic and I used just the colours in the box set.
What do you think of these models? I like them.
At this point, you can pretty much stop and call your model “Battle Ready.” If you follow the steps on the Citadel Colour Website for “Battle Ready” miniatures, this is where you end – and it didn’t take too long to get here.
A look at the three miniatures together. I am very happy with how they turned out.
If you want to get them to what they call “Parade Ready,” then you would continue enhancing the miniature with what is called highlighting. I took that further step with my Legions of Steel miniature, but for these guys, I am happy to stop here.
Step 4 – Add Basing Materials
Normally I would apply static grass, flock and small rocks to my miniatures’ bases at this point. Perhaps even some sand. That said, these miniatures come packed with a special technical paint called “Astrogranite.”
Being that I wanted to paint the miniature using just the materials in the box, I used that to finish off my miniatures.
Astrogranite. This stuff is thick. Do not apply with a brush – you will ruin it. Instead, find a little dental tool or some other sculpting tool. Failing that, use a brush you don’t care about.
Once you lather this stuff on, you are done! Your miniature is Battle Ready!!
The Video Tutorial on How to Paint Space Marines
Wrapping it up…
There you have it. This is exactly how I painted up my Space Marine Assault Intercessors to a Battle Ready standard using only the paints in the Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set by Games Workshop.
Normally, I would have taken it another step and highlighted all of the base colours again to raise the contrast level, but really, these guys look good to go. These guys are “Battle Ready!”
In this article, I review the Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set by Games Workshop. This paint set represents my first step back towards Warhammer 40,000 after a very long break from the company. In fact, I opened this product second from my “buying into the New 40K” purchase. I opened and reviewed the Citadel Assembly Handle first.
What’s in the Box?
So, What is in the Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set box. Well, Games Workshop packed it with 6 paint pots, 3 miniatures and 1 paint brush.
Inside the Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set you find 6 paint pots, 3 miniatures and a paint brush. The paints in the set include Abandon Black, Macragge Blue, Balthasar Gold, Corax White, Agrax Earthshade and Astrogranite.
The fact that GW chose to pack the paint starter set without contrast paints really surprised me. I thought that contrast paints would be GWs newest push and figured they would have gone that way with this introduction paint set. Instead, you get the classic (or base and layer) paint pots along with some shade and basing paint.
It is a proven approach, just not what I expected in the box. Now, let’s take a closer look at the spure.
Above I present to you a picture of the Space Marine Assault Intercessors Sprue from this boxed set.
The pieces on the Sprue look nice and have all the details that I want. They build up pleasantly too.
Built Space Marine Assault Intercessors
As you can see on the frame above, the pieces are numbered. The back of the box shows you how to put together the miniature and paint the models.
The back of the Space Marine Assault Intercessors + Paint Set shows you how to build and paint the miniatures.
I found these miniatures very straight forward to build.
Here I placed the pieces of an Assault Intercessor on my cutting mat. It has been a long time since I built a Space Marine model, but I knew from my last project not to cut that peg off of the Space Marine’s foot. It is there to glue the Marine to its base. A close up photo of one of the Intercessors I built. One of the first Games Workshop miniatures that I built in years. These are some great looking minis here.
Overall, I am happy with the contents of the Assault Intercessors + Paints Set and enjoyed building the product. I like that you get the suggested paints for the Space Marine army here and that you get full sized bottles for the paints. That I did not expect!
Now, the way many people look at these boxed sets is by how much money they can save by buying the products in this fashion. Let’s break things down and see if you are really saving money by buying the Space Marines Assault Intercessors + Paints Set.
Value for the Money – Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints Set
Right or wrong, the way many people like to measure the value of Games Workshop box sets by comparing the price of whats in the box versus the price of buying everything individually. Let’s break down what is in this boxed set and do the comparison.
I live in Canada, so we will conduct the cost comparison in Canadian Dollars.
In the Space Marines Assault Intercessors + Paints Set you get…
- 4 Full Sized Paint Pots (worth $5.40 each = $21.60 total)
- 2 Half Sized Paint Pots (Astrogranite and Agrax Earth Shade sell in 24ml pots instead of the 12ml pots in this set – regular price $9.40 – value of two half sized posts = $9.40 total)
- 3 Easy Build Miniatures (using the price for Age of Sigmar Easy Build Miniatures, these figures should be worth $20 total)
- 1 Starter Paint Brush ($8 to $9 – I will use $9 for easy math)
Adding all of those items up brings me to $60 of value in this box. Games Workshop sells this set for $45. This means that you save $15 by buying this way versus buying the items individually. Not bad for those looking to save a few dollars.
Scale Comparison
As with all my reviews, I like to include scale comparison photos. I approach this Assault Intercessors + Paints Set Review no differently. Below I present to you a scale comparison image of the included Space Marines Assault Intercessors.
A scale comparison image. Left to Right… Legions of Steel Miniature, Assault Intercessor, GW Chaos Cultist, Assault Intercessor, Reaper Miniatures.
As you can see, I painted up the miniatures from the box set. I will share some better pictures of the painted models in a future post on Must Contain Minis.
The Review and Unboxing on YouTube
If you prefer to watch content, this post is now up on YouTube too. This written post is a little more comprehensive because it includes a value breakdown. Other than that though, this video covers most of the rest of this article.
In this quick unboxing video, I show exactly what is in the Warhammer 40,000 Space Marines: Assault Intercessors + Paints box set. This is essentially your “Start Painting Space Marines” go to product.
Wrapping it up…
Thank you for joining me in my Assault Intercessors + Paints Set Review. For my first step back into 40K, this box set feels just right. As I mentioned earlier, I wish that they included a full unit of miniatures here, but otherwise I can’t complain.
The cost doesn’t break my bank account, and there are savings here versus buying the products individually. The box gives me the recommended colours to paint up the miniatures to a “Battle Ready” standard. Perfect. Especially since I want to paint my new Space Marines force in the standard colours of the Ultra Marines.
