Help! I can't open a PDF file with my Adobe Acrobat. A popup says that Adobe Reader could not open my pdf file "because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged." But I can open other files that are nearly identical to this one. Can you help me open the file? Thank you.

Is a a new Adobe Acrobat file repair tool that allows users to fix PDF files which are inaccessible from Adobe's file recovery. A common error message from Adobie is that Acrobat PDF file format is having difficulties, the file is damaged and could not be repaired by normal means.

In addition to Rick Dee's post, kindly note that a PDF file that is corrupt, can't be opened by any application. There are various other PDF viewers available that can be tried to open the file. If the file can't be opened, the problem is with the PDF file. Try downloading the file again (if downloaded from online) or try copying the file from the same source again and then check.

I agree with the above suggestions. But there is a solution which could solve this issue, it just for you to reference and could not be represented by Microsoft.
If we manage or administer software that automatically generates PDFs, modify the way the PDF is produced. Make sure that no extraneous bytes appear before %PDF at the head of the file.
We disable the header validation on machines by setting the appropriate preference. We could set this preference per user in HKCU or at the machine level for all users in HKLM. If the AVGeneral key does not exist, create it manually.
The HKLM path is generically:
For example, to change the behavior for Acrobat 11.0, create a DWORD at this location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat\11.0\AVGeneral\bValidateBytesBeforeHeader=dword:00000000
The HKCU path is generically:
For example, to change the behavior for Reader 10.0, create a DWORD at this location: HKCU\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\AVGeneral\bValidateBytesBeforeHeader=dword:00000000
Always change the product and version number in the preference path to match our installation. This method allows the PDF to display on machines we control.

You can "try" to save the pdf attachment first before opening it in Reader but most of the time, that doesn't make a difference. It will confirm that the file is being corrupted by the email though and not by some process involved in opening it from your email client.

It is an original (typed be me) Word file .docx, I have also tried it saving the file as .doc

The mistake is on me, sorry. Earlier I installed new software that also installed adobe 8. After removing, re-installing, shutting down, etc., it is now working.

Contact the sender of that email and ask them why you cannot open it.

Emailing a pdf file is the most common way to corrupt it. Some email clients will encode the pdf to make it smaller and therefore make the transfer faster but when it is unencoded at the other end, it corrupts. Have them either Zip it first or post it online and send you a link.

Having a problem with email attachments not opening. Adobe reader could not open pdf because it is not a supported file type or has been damaged. We recently added a user to our laptop and my account is now an administrator. I have Windows 8. Called Adobe for help and they implied it has something to do with that, but unless I pay their fee, they can't help!

If you are getting the above error message, it means your computer is attempting to use Adobe Reader to open a secure ePub or PDF book. Secure ePub and PDF books are only compatible with Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), they will NOT work with Adobe Reader.
If you do have ADE installed and you are still getting this error message, this means your computer is still using Adobe Reader as the default program for those file types. This can be changed by following the set of steps below that apply to you:
1. Press Windows key and X key and then select Control Panel.
2. Click 'Default Programs'.
3. Click 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program'.
4. In the list that appears, locate '.acsm', click on it to highlight it, then click 'Change program'.
5. Select 'Adobe Digital Editions' and click 'OK'.
6. Repeat steps 4-5 for the '.epub' extension as well.
If the issue persists, you may have to get in touch with Adobe Support to get this sorted out because this error is related to Adobe reader.
