Powering PC version of GPU Ati Radeon 5870 HD Eyefinity 6 edition 2GB on MAC pro 1.1?
Power consumption 5870 should use
180 W idle and
296 W load
My mac Pro 1.1 mid 2006 (El Capitan) has only 2 x 6 pins on MOBO (NONE of the sockets in use right now)
I also have 1 x 4 pin free socket from my DVD rom (I can remove the other DVD rom if needed to get another 4 pin socket)
However, the 5870 HD has 1 x 6 and 1 x 8 pin sockets
How do I compensate missing power from 6 pin socket to 8 pin
BTW, I am going to use this GPU for WINDOWS OS boot system on MAC, I will still keep stock GPU for running MAC OS
Final question, what should I use (2x4 pin to 8 pin or 6 pin to 8 pin converter) will they work or damage my MB?
Thank you mall who can explain this to me, I've been scratching my head for days now
The 5870 HD was gift from a friend, so no money spent on this one but I am trying to get better performance

With that said, what are my options of installing and running this card?
I'm not just a newbie @ macrumors, I am also e tech newbie or a MAC newbie
Should I get one of the 4 to 8 or 6 to 8 pin converters and try if it works, or just forget about this card, sell it and get a MAC compatible one with that money?

It really depends on how much the power supply can provide and how many other things you have in the system.

Which connector did you use, 6 pin to 8 pin or 4 pin to 8 pin, any visual reference (photo) please, as I am going to need 1 x 6 pin and 1 x 8 pin to power both GPU sockets (6 and 8)?
Thank you for your reply, I just started feeling more optimistic about this : )

I didn’t own a 1,1, but AFAIK, that’s 2x mini 6pin on the logic board, not normal 6pin.
Since the 5870 is not that demanding. You should able to power it by
[Dual mini 6pin -> single 8pin] + [single 8pin female -> dual 6+2pin]
I made this post to state the reason how and why this cable combination work. Even that post was not made for 1,1, but should be applicable in this case
Anyway, a quick search shows that the 5870 only max at 212W.
Since your Eyefinity version only draw a bit more than the standard 5870, and that 212W is actually the Furmark power consumption. I have confidence that your card can hardly draw 200W under normal use. So, my suggested cable combination should work.

So my understanding is (I also read your post from the link above) that I will need 2 cables, first cable will convert TWO x 6 pins to ONE 8 pin and then the other cable will split ONE 8 pin to ONE 6 pin and ONE 8 (6+2) pin to go to 5870 card, and all this is done to balance the load on motherboard 2 x 6 pin sockets?
Thank you very much for your time and consideration, I will now check and order aforementioned cables. Hopefully they will arrive fast, and will post the results after installation. : )

You are welcome.
At the end, it should look something like this.
P.S. You may realise that I use 6pin as the bridge. Both 6pin and 8pin can do the job properly, both of them consist three 12V wires. So, 8pin won't do any better for load sharing. However, I usually suggest the other use a 8pin bridge because dual mini 6 pin to single 8pin is a more useful cable in general. e.g. In future, if you upgrade to a card that has single 8pin, you can simply use that dual mini 6pin to single 8pin cable. On the other hard, dual mini 6 to single 6 is purely a bridge, no other function. I pick this one because I expect the 1080Ti will be my last GPU in this cMP. So, I only need a bridge, and 6pin is little bit cheaper

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that i received my cables and installed them as h9826790 said
Although, I had to restart my MAC almost 50 times before I got to install drivers for it ( I was running 2 GPUs, stock card and the Radeon HD 5870 eyefinity 6 card) and I guess they were conflicting each other (there were 2 red LED lights turning on soon as I would start MAC)
Anyway, now I am having some flickering on my screens (2 x HP 2711x) and sometimes whole screen will turn into some grey color lines, then after the other one too and then
Overall for a MAC running with 13 GB of RAM memory and a 2 GB graphic card, it is lagging a lot, youtube videos are slow and lagging, web pages when scrolling UP or DOWN have lags and so on.
Could this be because I did not flash my card?
And BTW, I am stuck on windows OS and cannot switch to MAC because of no boot screen

Flash should not make any difference once OS is loaded (driver controlling the card, but not EFI), and I am not sure if eyefinity model is flashable or not. (You can always flash the Mac EFI onto a 5870, however, it may disable some ports. In worst case, all ports on this “abnormal config” card will be disabled and make you extremely hard to recover)
Since you are running Windows, that means the shuttering probably not driver issue but something else. (Assuming you installed the correct driver. Windows driver should support eyefinity card)
It’s hard to tell which part is wrong. In general, unless you can 100% the GPU was working flawlessly before this installation. The biggest suspect still the GPU itself (e.g. faulty card). However, since you only tested the card in Windows. And you mentioned there is some conflict between the old / new GPU. So, the chance of having driver issue still there. You better remove the old card, only install the 5870. Completely remove ALL GPU driver. And then re-install the AMD driver.
Perform a PRAM reset should bring you back to OSX. (Not sure which Mac OS you are running, but if you are really running macOS on a 1,1, but not OSX. That means you installed the macOS by some hack / patch. In this case, I don’t know will PRAM reset break anything)

Vano,

UPD: Netkas

Preamble: this is for Mac Pros only. There's not point to flash a card on a hack.
Too many people here flash their PC cards with BIOS that were originally designed for other models. This can cause wonky fan behavior or worse.
It's better to make your own ROM, that is, your card's original BIOS + Apple's EFI (ideally, EBC for compatibility with old Mac Pros).
This post shows how to do it.
Notice: the 6870/6850 ROMs are designed for 64-bit EFI Mac Pros (e.g. 2008+). Work in progress (by Netkas), so be warned.
Before you start, It's always safer to enable file and screen sharing on you Mac Pro (system prefs/sharing). Make sure OS X is up to date.
2. Boot on OS X (need a working card or another Mac). Place a copy of your saved rom and the files attached in this post at the root of your home directory. Keep the original myrom saved somewhere.
2a. First stage is to add the EFI section to the BIOS.
Open the terminal (utilities).
If you want to flash a 5870, paste the following
Code:
blocknum=`printf %d "'\`dd if=myrom.rom bs=1 skip=2 count=1 2>/dev/null\`"`
size=$(($blocknum * 512))
dd if=5870_uakari_netkas.efi of=myrom.rom bs=$size seek=1 conv=notrunc
If you want to flash a 5770, paste this
Code:
blocknum=`printf %d "'\`dd if=myrom.rom bs=1 skip=2 count=1 2>/dev/null\`"`
size=$(($blocknum * 512))
dd if=5770_vervet_netkas.efi of=myrom.rom bs=$size seek=1 conv=notrunc
If you want to flash a 6870, paste this
Code:
blocknum=`printf %d "'\`dd if=myrom.rom bs=1 skip=2 count=1 2>/dev/null\`"`
size=$(($blocknum * 512))
dd if=6870.efi.rom of=myrom.rom bs=$size seek=1 conv=notrunc
For a 6850, paste this
Code:
blocknum=`printf %d "'\`dd if=myrom.rom bs=1 skip=2 count=1 2>/dev/null\`"`
size=$(($blocknum * 512))
dd if=6850.efi.rom of=myrom.rom bs=$size seek=1 conv=notrunc
Then hit return.
If you have a 6870/6850, jump to step 4.
2b. Then check if the ROM could hold the EFI. Open myrom it in text edit and search "mcuc". If 2 instances are found, go to step 4.
If only one is found, you need to.
3a. Move the mcuc section (last part of the BIOS) to make room for the EFI.
At this stage you can trash the modified myrom.rom that only has one "MCuC". Open the original myrom in 0xed. Scroll down to the end, it should show a long string of "F". Select a large part of it. Cut.
Look for "mcuc" (text search field) and locate the 2nd instance, near the end of ROM. Note its offset, as indicated at the bottom of the window. It should be 1A000 (hex). You can switch between decimal and hexadecimal by double clicking on the "dec" or "hex" text on the bottom left.
Upward "mcuc" is a long string of "F" where the EFI should be inserted. Put the cursor anywhere in that string. Switch to insert mode ("edit" menu) and paste. Note the new offset of "mcuc". If the offset hasn't changed, or if you have lost the 2nd instance of mcuc, close the ROM without saving and do these steps again.
Save a copy of myrom.rom (with this name) in your home directory.
Then redo steps 2a and 2b. If only one instance of mcuc found, you're screwed. You cannot make a custom ROM with your original BIOS.
If 2 instances are found.
3b. Correct the new offset of mcuc in myrom. Say it has changed from 1A000 to 1A200 (if you have pasted a 512-Byte string of Fs). In 3 Bytes, this new offset is written 01 A2 00. In BIOS code, bytes are written backwards: 00 A2 01. To find where to indicate this offset, locate the first instance of mcuc. 8 Bytes upward (16 chars) you should see the original offset 00 A0 01. Go to overwrite mode and replace this with the new offset. Save myrom.rom in your home directory.
4. Fix last oprom indicator (specifies that the BIOS is no longer the only element in the ROM) and checksum. To do it, paste the following in the terminal and hit return
Code:
python fixrom.py myrom.rom myrom.rom
5. Flash your card with the new myrom.rom
Credits go to pipomolo42 for the script and terminal commands, netkas for tweaking Apple's EFI, and mostly Rominator for the tests.

а) Желтый сделанного “паука” с желтым Molex;
б) Черные крайние “паука” - с синим Molex;
Molex.

Administrator
Enter.
ATI Radeon HD 5870.

Thanks for your good work, i´ve here an Sapphire 5870 Game Edititon with 2xDVI, 1xDPand 1xHDMI.
looks like to be the same reference to the XFX5870 from wich you´re offer the first ROM. I flashed the card with both ROMs (XFX5870 and SAP5870) under both roms the card is shown under mac os x in the system profiler but no video out to the Display over DVI.
is it also possible to check my ROM to get an modified?
Thanks for your response.

Unlike Macroysan, I have the latest Snow Leopard Graphics Update kexts installed. so interesting to see the increase in framerate and the fail of the OpenGL 3.0 tests. fascinating.
Strange though. I get no detected sound output devices upon restart from Windows to Mac OS. but when I restart again into Mac OS the 2nd time. sound works just fine. Wonder whats going on there.
Congrats to you. If you would like to compare with my OpenGL Test then you have to sett the same settings that i did!
Take a look at Post 124
I use 1920x1200.

I've ordered a sapphire vapor-x 5870, to replace the borken 8800GT in my 2008 (3,1) macpro.
Which BIOS should I flash it with? There have been several posted here.

I have a few questions regarding these new cards and this looks like a thread where i may get some answers as there seems to be some knowledgable folk here!
I currently have a 2008 dual 2.8 Mac Pro with an 8800GT in it. I am using that to run 2 x 23" ACDs.
I plan on upgrading to an NEC 27" or 30" monitor in the not too distant future and these have both DVI and Display port inputs - this will become my main monitor but I want to keep my 2 ACDs as well so I will have a 3 monitor setup.
I am interested in the 5870 - but the Apple one would be no good to me as it has 2 x Mini DP and 1 DVI. The PC version seems perfect (in terms of outputs) as it has 2 x DVI and 1 x DP which is exactly what I would need.
However, I seem to remember reading here somewhere that the flashed PC version won't run 3 monitors - is that correct? and if so, is it always likely to remain that way or may that get fixed as the flash files get better?
I considered that I might be able to keep my 8800gt and use it to run the ACDs and use an apple 5870 for the NEC but then I realised that a) I wouldn't have enough power plugs (I would need 3 and only have 2) and b) apparently running both ATI and Nvidia cards can cause problems, or simply won't work, in Windows. Am I right about that?
So will it be possible to run the 3 monitors I want using a flashed PC 5870 or is this never going to work?
If not, is there another card/combination of cards that would allow me to do it?
Also, if the 5870 can work, would there be any benefit in keeping my 8800GT in the MP, even if it wasn't connected to a monitor, for it's CUDA capabilities? I do a bit of After Effects rendering and I have heard that CUDA cards can help speed that up? If so and I did do that, would I have problems in Windows even though the monitor wasn't connected?
