Vmware drag and drop включить
I am using a Windows 10 host machine with a VMware Workstation 15 Pro (15.0.2 build-10952284).
The drag&drop feature stopped working with one of the guest machines, which is a Kali Linux (Kali GNU/Linux Rolling 2020.3). It still works fine for the windows machines.
The copy&paste feature works fine for all machines, Kali included.
So far I have tried:
Restarting the guest, VMware, and the host machine
Checking the guest isolation options, which are properly checked.
Reinstalling the VMware tools as instructed by the feature "Reinstall VMware Tools. " - This broke the c&p feature.
Follow the steps to install open-vm-tools from a similar problem here - This caused the machine to freeze completely whenever I tried to drag&drop.
Tried some similar solution with slight variations here and here - Same result
Check and uncheck the guest isolation as also suggested here - Did nothing
Enable the run-vmblock\\x2dfuse.mount feature as suggested here - Also nothing
Update: Also used this excellent guide, which is somewhat similar to the above, but uses the --purge options when removing the previous package. This solved the freeze issue, but did not enable the DnD feature.
If anyone has any solution for this I would highly appreciate it :-)
Would be happy to provide any further details necessary.
Update: The guest is bridged to the host's network, but for some reason I can only ping host->guest and not the other way around. When I turn off the firewall I can ping both ways, but not drag and drop.
1.1. Drag and drop and copy/paste
To begin, you can easily transfer files from the physical PC to the virtual machine with a simple drag and drop.
But, you can also use copy/paste in both directions (physical machine to virtual machine and vice versa).
However, to do this, make sure that these features are enabled in the settings of your virtual machine.
By default, these options are enabled and are available in the "Guest isolation" section :
- Enable drag and drop
- Enable copy and paste
Note : if these options are disabled and dimmed, shut down the virtual machine to enable them.
To transfer a file from the physical computer to the virtual machine, simply drag it to the virtual machine window (where the guest OS is displayed).
You can also right-click "Copy" on the physical computer and right-click "Paste" in the guest OS.
A VMware transfer window will be displayed and another will be displayed by the guest OS.
As you can see, the files or folders dragged/dropped will be copied by the guest OS from a folder with a weird name.
In fact, when you use drag and drop, the VMware tools temporarily copy the data into a subfolder "vmware-xxxx\VMwareDnD" of the temporary folder of the guest OS.

I had the same problem and found that this can be fixed by executing the following commands:
- sudo apt-get autoremove open-vm-tools
- Install VMware Tools by following the usual method ( Virtual Machine --> Reinstall VMWare Tools )
- Reboot the VM
- sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop
- Reboot the VM, after the reboot copy/paste and drag/drop will work!
I found I didn't need to install VMware Tools. Doing an apt-get of open-vm-tools, then open-vm-tools-desktop, and then restarting worked for me.
I tried the approach suggested by solution101 above, but it didn't work for me. This is how I solved the problem:
- Open Terminal
- sudo apt install open-vm-tools-desktop
- restart the guest operating system
This seems to have fixed the copy-and-paste issue for me.
This is copied verbatim from a vmware community forum:
- Go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation
- UNCHECK bothcheckboxes (Enable drag and drop, Enable copy and paste) and click OK.
- Shut down the guest, and shut down VMware Workstation
- Reboot the host computer
- Run VMware Workstation but do not launch the guest yet.
- Go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation for the guest, and
- CHECK both checkboxes
- Power On the guest.
@AlaaM. Perhaps they have removed the feature? I no longer run VMWare, but instead am using KVM/QEMU for virtual machines.
The best and working solution is restarting your VMWare application (Workstation, Fusion, etc.), not the VM itself. (provided, of course, that you have installed the VMWare tools already.)
In my case I also needed to restart the VMWare Workstation Server service (vmware-hostd.exe process). Just restarting VMWare application was not enough.
You can't uncheck the checkboxes while the VM is running; they are disabled. If you do this when the VM is not running, there is no effect (VMWare Workstation 12 Pro).
In my case, somehow the guest start-up job running the VMware User Agent was removed from my xfce session autostart. You need to run /usr/bin/vmware-user-suid-wrapper at login
I can see how old this post is, but I noticed something relevant; it wasn't even Ubuntu. Apparently "Shared folders" must be enabled prior to installing open-vm-tools - also had open-vm-tools-desktop already installed and nothing worked. Reinstalling both packages does the job, seemingly when shared folder were enabled; this works instantly. With apt-get :
I'd assume that when enabling "shared folder" before the OS install, it should work out of the box.
slight correction to command: "sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools open-vm-tools-desktop --reinstall".
I've installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on VMware® Workstation 15 Pro Version 15.5.2 build-15785246. The problem is that the drag and drop feature (From the host (Windows 10) to the guest (Ubuntu) on the VMware) doesn't work. I've tries the following two methods, but no success!
- sudo apt-get autoremove open-vm-tools
- Install VMware Tools by following the usual method (Virtual Machine --> Reinstall VMware Tools)
- Reboot the VM
- sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools
- sudo apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop
- Reboot the VM
- Go into VM / Settings / Options / Guest Isolation
- Uncheck both checkboxes (Enable drag and drop, Enable copy and paste) and click OK.
Any idea how to solve the issue, please?

Drag and drop in this context is for files.
Is your other system properly mapped (smb://192.168.x.y) ?
If I map a drive on the other system, drag and drop works fine. If I do not map a drive, drag and drop does not work. So this is likely a security change.
Without logging in, the feature will depend upon successful browsing which does not always work, even now in Windows. So it is necessary to map a drive before dragging and dropping.
Follow up note:
I am using a Windows 10 host machine with a VMware Workstation 15 Pro (15.0.2 build-10952284).
There was an issue with Kali machines and a VMware Workstation 15 + version causing Kali to hang and VMware to "Stop Working" Nothing to do with Drag and Drop. But it was corrected in Workstation 15 ++ . Try upgrading VMware Workstation. I am using V16 at this point.
In response to the Firewall question:
The following ports are associated with file sharing and server message block (SMB) communications: Microsoft file sharing SMB: User Datagram Protocol (UDP) ports from 135 through 139 and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) ports from 135 through 139.
Also make sure File and Print Sharing and Network Discovery or the equivalent for Linux are enabled on all machines.
With VMware Workstation VMware Tools available for many types of operating systems, you can easily transfer folders and files from your physical computer to a virtual machine and vice versa.
For this, you can use :
- drag and drop
- VMware Workstation folder shares
Note that in both cases, you will need the VMware Tools in the guest OS and activate the corresponding option in the settings of your virtual machine.

Enter the following command in terminal to enable drag and drop between virtual machines and the host.
Do the following to enable drag and drop between two virtual machines:
Open the virtual machine settings editor (VM > Settings), click the Options tab and select Guest isolation.
Select Disable drag and drop to and from this virtual machine to disable the feature. Deselect it to enable the feature.
Errors regarding permission turned up and I added "sudo" at the beginning of the commands. Still nothing different!
Just had this same problem where copy and paste stopped working with Workstation Pro 15.5.7 on Win 10 with Ubuntu 20.04 guest. Was working fine until both guest and host had some updates so hard to tell what caused it. The simple fix was a variation from method 2 from this answer.
1.2. VMware file sharing on Windows
To share folders on your physical PC to make them read-only (for security) or read/write (if needed) by the virtual machine.
To do this, open the settings of the virtual machine and go to the "Shared Folders" section and select the desired option :
- Disabled : VMware file sharing disabled (default value)
- Always enabled : always enabled (for this virtual machine)
- Enabled until next power off or suspend : activated until the virtual machine is power off or paused
- Map as a network drive in Windows guests : Automatically create a network drive where you will find all the shares created here. Which makes it easier to access these shares.
Click Add to create a new share.
The Add Shared Folder Wizard appears.
Click Browse to select the folder you want to share and make available to the virtual machine.
Then, enter the name under which this share will appear in the guest OS.
Enable sharing by checking the "Enable this share" box and check the "Read-only" box if you want this share to be read only.
Save the settings and click Yes.
If you don't check the "Map as a network drive . " box, the share will not appear in Computer (or This PC) by default.
In order to access it, you will have to go through the network option (but you will probably encounter a network discovery disabled by default error).
To access them without problem, type : \\vmware-host\Shared Folders
As you can see, our InformatiWeb share appears.
In this folder, we find the files of this shared folder.
To make your life easier, we recommend that you check the "Map as a network drive in Windows guests" box to have VMware Workstation automatically create a network drive whose contents will match the list of shared folders here.
In Computer (or This PC), you will see a "Shared Folders" network drive that is accessible with the letter Z and is mapped to \\vmware-host\Shared Folders.
As expected, you will have access to the list of shares created in the virtual machine settings.
Suddenly copy/paste stopped working from/to Windows 8 host computer to/from ubuntu virtual machine. Ubuntu restart did not help. I tried command:
But got report I have newest version. Guest Isolation settings are enabled. What could be the scenario of fixing this problem?
Note that this is a known issue - there's an issued with shared files not working in a Linux VM, and it seems similar components of that don't work with VMware at this time.
I noticed this problem has to do with me using a different window manager. VM shared clipboard works fine using gdm3, but when I switched to DWM shared desktop no longer worked
