Установить elementary os на vmware
Elementary OS is one of the most beautiful, simple, effective and powerful Linux-based OS. It comes pre-packed with all sorts of functionalities and security that Ubuntu has to provide. In recent years, Elementary OS is really gaining popularity and is close to being a part of top 10 Distros according to the Distrowatch website. If you haven’t tried Elementry yet, do give it a try by learning how to install Elementary OS on a virtual machine like VMware Player. Before getting started, make sure that you have a latest ISO copy of Elementary OS which can be downloaded from its official website.
Note: Even though I’m showing the installation procedure using VMware, the process is pretty similar even when you are using VirtualBox.

Install Elementary OS On VMware Player
1. Installing Elementary OS in VMware is pretty simple. First off, open the VMware player and select ‘Create New Virtual Machine.‘
2. In the next window, select the first radio button “Typical” and click ‘Next‘ button to continue.
3. As we are going to install Elementary OS using downloaded ISO file, select the option ‘Installer disc image file,’ browse for the Elementary ISO and click on the ‘Next‘ button. At this point, you don’t have to worry about that little caution mark.
4. Here in this window, select guest operating system as ‘Linux‘ and the version as ‘Other Linux 2.6.x‘ and click ‘Next‘ button to continue. If you are trying to install the 64-bit version of Elementary OS, then don’t forget to select the 64-bit kernel.
5. Here in this window, you need to allocate some disk space to be used by your new operating system. Enter the space as required and click ‘Next‘ button. For this guide, I’ve selected the default 8GB as my disk space.
Space requirement purely depends on how extensively you are going to use your new operating system. For instance, a clean installation only took 3.65GB of space. The one I frequently use took around 26GB space.
Note: Minimum space to allocate is 5GB.
6. Now you can easily review and customize your hardware requirements. As you can see from the image below, I’ve increased the memory to 1 GB as I have plenty of it to spare. If you wish to customize your hardware specs, click on ‘Customize Hardware‘ button.
7. Make required changes and click ‘OK‘ button. After finishing hardware settings click on the ‘Finish‘ button on the main window to complete the setup process.
8. Now click on the ‘Power on this virtual machine‘ option in the main VMware window to boot into the new Elementary OS.

Configure Elementary OS in VMware
1. Wait for a few seconds and the OS installation screen will greet you. Here click on the ‘Install Elementary OS‘ button to start the installation process.
2. Here the operating system will show you the minimum space required and other stuff. If you wish to download all updates and third-party software during the installation procedure then select the required check boxes and click on the ‘Continue‘ button.
Note: These updates and third-party software require you to have a decent internet connection. However, I recommend you not to install the updates as it prolongs the installation procedure. You can always install the required updates after completing the installation.
3. Now select the radio button ‘Erase disk and install elementary OS‘ and click on the ‘Continue‘ button and then the ‘Install Now‘ button in the next window to start the installation procedure.
4. From here it’s just a cake-walk, select your time zone, keyboard layout, username, computer name and password. After completing the installation, restart the virtual machine and you are good to go.
That’s all there is to do and it is that simple to install Elementary OS on VMware.
As this is a virtual machine, you can experiment all you want and don’t have to be worried about damaging your system or files. However, make sure that you take quick snapshots of a known good condition (ideally, right after the installation). This helps you to roll back when things go wrong.
Hopefully that helps and do comment below if you face any problems or to share your thoughts and experiences.
If you’ve ever tried to install elementary OS 6 “Odin” on VMware Workstation, you may have given up out of frustration. When you first fire up your new virtual machine, the screen resolution is a tiny 800x600 — too small for the elementary installer to fit on the screen. This step-by-step guide will help you install elementary OS and enable VMware Tools to unlock higher resolutions.
Andrew Vojak on Twitter notes that switching the Firmware Type from BIOS to UEFI increases the resolution. I’ve confirmed that this bumps the resolution to 1024x768, which is fully usable for the installation process. Instructions updated below.

(other versions may work as well)
- elementary OS 6 ISO, downloaded from elementary.io
In VMware Workstation, go to File > New Virtual Machine… to start the new virtual machine wizard.
Create a new virtual machine. Typical will choose sane defaults. Click Next.
Linux and Ubuntu will be automatically selected. Click Next.
Name your virtual machine and select the installation location. Click Next.
Configure your disk capacity. If you are just testing elementary OS, 20 GB should be more than sufficient. If you are planning to use this for development or install many applications, you may want to consider opting for more disk space. Store the virtual disk as a single file for best performance. Click Next when you are ready to proceed.
Click Customize Hardware to make adjustments to memory, networking, and CPU cores. Otherwise, click Finish to continue.

I was facing the same issue with VMWare Workstation 16.1.x till I reach this post and took the advice posted previously of Colin Dean regarding EFI Mode The issue that I wasn't able to reach this option through the VMWare GUI, so after a quick google search, all the needed to solve the issue is the below :
- Create your Elementary OS
- No need to start it yet
- Go to the machine .VMX file
- add the below in the second line of the VMX file
- Save the .VMX file
- Boot your machine
This solved the issue for me, please try it and let me know :)
On VirtualBox, you have to enable EFI mode. Perhaps there is a similar setting for VMWare.

Login (Twice)
Your user is now configured. Go ahead and login now. You may need to login a second time, but this is only required on initial login.
You’re now logged in, but you still have a the unusable 800x600 resolution. Let’s fix that next.
You may be able to install the open-vm-tools-desktop drivers from AppCenter. They didn’t show for me initially, but they can be easily installed from the Terminal.
Click the Applications area in the upper left of the screen. Click on Terminal to continue.
Update and install the open-vm-tools-desktop.
Enter Y and then hit the Enter key to install.
Once installed, the drivers will immediately resize the virtual display to fit.
You’ve successfully installed elementary OS 6 “Odin” on VMware Workstation. That wasn’t so painful. Next you should fire up App Center and get your updates. You may also want to head to Flathub and install some apps.

Running VMware Workstation Pro 16.1.x on Windows. Cannot install Elementary OS 6 from VM because display area is too small.
I am also testing elementary for the 1st time. I am experiencing the same challenge. I did manage to install it by using the tab and guessing which button is next. Ie, after choosing language, I used TAB twice and then Space. Then I played with TAB sequence and space until it elementary started installing. I also tried all the Vmware fusion display settings, non worked

Installing
The installation will now proceed. Your VM will automatically restart once installed.
Once elementary OS is installed, you will be greeted with the OEM Setup screen. Like the installer, you will select a language and keyboard layout before proceeding with your user details.
Update 10/9/2021 — Switch Firmware Type to UEFI
At this point, you should be able to switch the firmware type from BIOS to UEFI to increase the default resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768.
From the virtual machine page, click on Edit virtual machine settings.
Click on the Options tab. Select the Advanced settings. Change Firmware type to UEFI. Click OK to apply and close the window.
Your new virtual machine is now ready. Click Power on this virtual machine to get started with the installation. If everything works as expected, you should be greeted with a fully visible installer window.
If for some reason this does not work, go back to your Virtual Machine Settings and change the Firmware type back to BIOS. Then proceed with the installation steps below.
If it does work for you, feel free to install elementary OS as you choose, then skip ahead to the Install VMware Tools section below to unlock higher resolutions and automatic resize options.
If you’re here, then the UEFI Firmware type option didn’t work and you’re now installing with a small SVGA resolution of 800x600.
When VMware Tools are installed, virtual machines will automatically resize to the window. Since they are not preinstalled on elementary OS, the installer will use this small resolution and you will not be able to click any of the navigation buttons. I’ve documented the series of steps to continue without clicking on the off-screen buttons.
