Renewed Transform panel and live shapes
The renewed Transform panel contains a Rectangle Properties section that is active when you have a rectangle or rounded rectangle shape selected in Illustrator. It allows you to set the following properties:
- Rectangle Width and Height
- Rectangle Angle
- Corner Type
- Corner Radius
These settings are live and can be edited at any time.
Additionally Scale Rectangle Corners and Scale Strokes & Effects, the latter of which was only accessible previously from the Transform panel menu are in plain sight from now on. Making it easy to enable and disable either setting prior to transforming a selected object.

Stars are not Live Shapes - and so have "no shape properties" in the Transform panel.
However if you update to CC 2018, polygons and ellipses do have shape properties. I think this feature was first introduced in CC 2015.
Since you have an Adobe CC cloud subscription, updating is free.
Yeah its so useful to have live properties for a ractangle. I mean ist not like changing a rectangle, even a rounded one couldn't be done without these, while a star clearly needs no such thing, for one modifying it is more annoying and god forbid you wanted more star arms. Anyway the way adobe does this is totally idiotic, it should work more like how blender or maya works allowing me to define the properties.
@joojaa Inkscape has live star shapes with round corners, and inner and outer radius controls. It can actually be quite useful for all sorts of things, from cog wheel shapes, and more freaky shapes. see examples here.
Yes but thats not terribly useful (cogwheels aren't stars btw! as a cogwheel requires either a involute or cycloid shapes. Im a Mech Eng after all), it would be more useful if you could define your own rules (well i can but thats a different thing most of you can not), just like you can in maya and blender. See can you do spirals, involutes, arrowheaded thin pie graphs, lego pieces with varying lengths. Both maya and Blender can do this and allow you to change the values without the software devs ever needing to know how to do these. You can right there in the GUI without a single line of code
@joojaa - I'm not talking about designing for real mathematically correct cogwheels, I mean it's useful for stylised graphics. There is actually a cogwheel extension in Inkscape too.
Yes and im not ataking about inventing things with stuff others give you but things that are actually useful to you day to day that you decide what they are.
I always ended up just creating a new rounded rectangle if the existing one don't work. Is there a way to modify the corner radius without having to create a new shape?
I know I can modify the bezier handle manually one-by-one, but I can't figure out how to do this in a more accurate way for all 4 corners.
What if you don't see the Rectangle Properties?
Drawing a rectangle with the Rectangle tool creates a "Rectangle Shape" object.
Any other way of creating a rectangle (e.g. if you load a file from an SVG perhaps) will give you a path that happens to be rectangular. Illustrator won't recognise it as a "Rectangle Shape" object.
To convert a rectangular path into a Rectangle Shape:
Select the rectangles you want to convert.
Go to the menu Object > Shape > Convert to Shape
This will create a Rectangle Shape of exactly the same size.
Note that if the path is even slightly not rectangular, it will create a "Polygon Shape", which won't work. If this happens, you will have to go through the points and line them up first.
Now you can select all your Rectangle Shapes and edit their corners in the Transform panel.

Does the Transform panel appear each time you create a rectangle?
Since its release, I’ve received a few questions from customers asking me the following:
Each time I draw a rectangle with the Rectangle tool, the Transform panel appears over the top of my rectangle, can I switch that off?
To stop the Transform panel from appearing each time you draw a new rectangle with the Rectangle tool:
- Display the Transform panel (Window > Transform).
- Deselect Show on Rectangle Creation from the Transform panel menu.
This setting is sticky, which means that when you relaunch Illustrator, the Transform panel will remain hidden when creating rectangles, unless you enable it again from the Transform panel menu.
[Thinking out loud] It seems the Show on Rectangle Creation option is enabled by default in Illustrator. I’m thinking that might not have been the best move by the development team as it seems to freak people out a little 🙂 Luckily this default behaviour can be easily changed.

I am using Illustrator CC - 2014. When I create a rectangle after selecting "Rectangle Tool (A)" from left side tool bar, rectangle is created and the transform panel displays "Rectangle Properties" as under;
However, when I create any other shape whether, triangle, polygon or circle in the same way, the transform panel displays "No Shape Properties" as under:
Is it a version problem? Or am I missing something to work. Please guide me. Thanks.

In CS6 and earlier, if you already have a rounded rectangle that you need to change the corner radius on, you can go to the Appearance Panel > Select Stroke > Effect > Convert to Shape > Rounded Rectangle… Then set Extra Width & Extra Height to 0, Then turn on Preview and set Corner Radius to a number that looks good, then click ok
Go back to stroke in appearances and make sure the stroke width is set to the original number
I can not find any way to get to the shape tool properties. The option does not show on my TRANFORM panel. Is there some place where I can turn it on? I can send you a screen capture if that would help. I have been trying for several days to figure this out, and have not been able to uncover the mystery. Thanks.
Hi Juana,
This was a problem for me and after a few hours of trying to find a solution to this problem, I realized that Illustrator had some updates available with some bug fixes. Updating Illustrator fixed the issue of not seeing the ellipse and polygon shape properties.
Hope this helps,
Dessi
I’m not a fan of the new shape properties and they take up a lot of valuable space in my toolbar. Is there a way to remove or hide them?

It seems like the best way is to use the Stylize/Round Corners effect on a regular rectangle. This way the corner radius is changeable and independent of the rectangle transform property.
With this method, the Appearance panel will have a Round Corners setting for any round rectangle paths. This will allow you to edit the corner radius for existing shapes.
But too bad that if you then use that path as a Clipping Mask the rounding effect will break. And if you do the Clipping Mask first, then try to add the Round Corners effect the image disappears. If trying to use this method with a Clipping Mask you can't win.
While drawing rounded rectangle (while still holding your mouse button), press UP and DOWN arrows to change radius. This is a common way of changing attribute values of certain tools in AI.
In the new Adobe Illustrator CC, you can use 2 easy methods to change the corner radius of a rounded corner rectangle that has already been drawn:
Simply hold and drag the round blue handles in each corner.
You can change the border radius of all four corners with precision by using the Shape Options and simply enter a new measurement for your corners.
To change only one corner or give a different corner radius value to each of them, click the chain in the middle and fill the corner radius field for each corner.
I believe this answer has been rendered obsolete by Adobe's policy of constantly changing interface. Someone needs to tell Adobe an inconsistent interface is a bad thing.
@PrestonBadeer Thanks for that. Seems you need to start with an non-rounded-corner rectangle for this to work though.
To round only a specific corner: 1. Deselect everything; 2. Use the "Direct Selection Tool (A)" to select only the specific corner; 3. Drag the "Live Corner" handles (i.e., the blue circle handles) as desired, or adjust more precisely via the "Corners" field on the control panel.
Try using Convert to Shape effect: Effect → Convert to Shape → Rounded Rectangle .
In case anyone comes across this question in 2021 and is tearing their hair out, here is an updated solution.
Live corners
If you select an object or one or more corner anchor points with the Direct Selection Tool, a Corner link appears in the Control panel allowing you to change individual corner settings for a selected corner, or multiple selected corners.
Unless disabled (View > Show Corner Widget), you’ll also see a little circular widget appear that you can Alt/Option click to toggle corner type or drag to change the radius. The live corner widget was introduced in the previous Illustrator update (January 2014).
For more extensive information on working with live corner widgets see the Illustrator Help:
Designing for Web
When a round corner type is set on a rectangle, the radius settings displayed in the Transform panel can translate into CSS properties.
- Select the rectangle or rounded rectangle.
- Locate the in the Layers panel.
- Choose Options for from the Layers panel menu.
- Name the object (I named mine ‘myRectangle’) and click OK.
- Display the CSS Properties panel (Window menu) to see the generated CSS for the selected rectangle.
Note: Generate CSS for Unnamed Objects is disabled by default in the CSS Export Options (CSS Properties panel menu), hence naming the object(s) in the Layers panel first.
For more information on using the CSS Properties panel see the following video on Adobe TV:
Use the Transform panel
Illustrator allows you to edit corners precisely in the Transform panel only when the object is a "Rectangle Shape", which therefore has "Rectangle Properties", which include corner radius.
