- /private/var/spool/cups/tmp error
Copy link to clipboard
I am getting a /private/var/spool/cups/tmp error message when trying to print PDFs. Printing works fine for all other documents. Running Mac High Sierra OS on Adobe Acrobat DC. All the latest updates are installed. I even tried deleting the printer, Canon Pixma MX892, and reinstalling with no change. Also did Pram and SMC reset, no luck. Any ideas?

Can you tell me where I change the read and writes permission to Adobe folders? I used this already because my acrobat was not installing. I changed the sudoers file. It is installed now on my Mojave Mac but I still can't print a pdf with my canon IP8750.

If my information are correct, you cannot print to Create a PDF as Apple does not allow virtual printers, which is a pitty.
If you get a /private/var/spool/cups/tmp error message, it may be that reat, write or execute rights are not attributed. As I said before, I cannot test on a MacOS, but I have some Unix knowledge and the MacOS is basically a Unix system. Apple modified quite a lot, but still, the kernal (in the best sense of the word) is Unix.
If I get a message like that, I look at the rights attributed to the directory, where the printing subsystem want’s writing.
The good news to this problem is that you are not alone. The bad news is that I do not know of a solution that has been given here in the forums in the last 2 years.
Adobe monitors these threads, but answers are sometimes slow to come. And Adobe needs first to reproduce the problem (as any other user here) to provide a working solution. The very big problem is, that each user configuration is unique and if the problem is connected to one of the unique elements, finding the solution is very complicated.

all test pages print, the printer is connected to another computer and it prints fine. when printing from the mac, this is the error it comes up with.

It looks like you were interacting with @KrazyToad, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.
Printing the PDF file as an image may resolve the issue. You may use the steps available here to print the PDF file as an image.
Let me know how it goes!

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.
I have gone through your Post and I understand your concerns.
I would like to help
Then Remove and Re-Add the printer back to the Mac printing Queue using Airprint
Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.
Figure : Example of the Printers & Scanners window
Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, and then do one of the following steps.
If your printer is listed , remove and re-add the printer to confirm it is set up for AirPrint. Click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer, click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name and then continue to the next step.
If your printer is not listed , click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.
Confirm AirPrint or Secure AirPrint displays in the Use or Print Using menu, and then click Add.
Figure : AirPrint displays in the Use menu
Try printing and let me know how it goes
Keep me posted how it goes
Thank you and have a great weekend 😊

Suddenly this afternoon, my printer is not printing. Error message is Printing - Can't open "/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/. " I've tried several times - Word document, Mail message, same results (except numbers after tmp/ change each time). I've rebooted the Mac and shut down and restarted the printer. Same results.
Deleted the printer from the printer list and re-added it again. Same results.

Okay, deleted all the printers, added them all back in, same results. Can't open "/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/. ". There is a second 8710 printer on the network, and I can print to it.

Sorry. Did you do the Reset or did you just delete all the printers?
The Reset will fix any permissions issues with the folders which is what it sounds like you are running into,

I did the Reset Printing System. I had deleted the problem printer earlier.
Curious - why would I have a permissions issue with one printer and not the other.
And another curious question (just in case - and you may not know the answer - that will be okay). I understand the 8710 is no longer manufactured. Do you know what the current replacement is - has the same features and uses the same ink jet cartridges?

You are correct. You would think a permissions issue would affect multiple printers. I just wanted to try the easy stuff first.
There are some odd things going on with certificates expiring on older software today. Perhaps this is yet another symptom of that. 😞
Try the following:
Please update your software using HP Easy Start.
2. Follow the prompts for setting up your printer. When you get to the software download it will show whether the software needs updated or not. If it does the box next to Printer Essentials will be checked by default and you just need to select the Install button.
The following should not be necessary but if you want to be extra diligent and guarantee a clean new install.
2. Open HP Easy Start and Select the HP Easy Start Menu in the macOS menu bar. In this menu select Uninstall HP Software.
3.Select Continue to start the Uninstall process
4. Once the uninstall completes. Select Set Up New Device.
5. Go through the new device setup process by following the prompts.
6. This will lead to the software download/install prompt.
7. Select install and the remaining prompts to finish the process.
The follow on product to the 8710 would be the OfficeJet Pro 8015 or 9015/9025. Unfortunately they do not use the same cartridges.
After finding out that my Kodak ESP C310 printer was no longer printing after installing OS X Yosemite, I tried entering these into the terminal to get the driver working again.
sudo sh -c 'echo "Sandboxing Relaxed" >> /etc/cups/cups-files.conf'
sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd
Nothing happened the first time I tried it, so I tried it again with still no luck. Now within seconds of opening the terminal I get this message :
It pops up every few seconds, so it is practically impossible for me to type anything into the terminal without it popping up right in the middle. I tried the fix from the other discussion on this issue, and that didn't work. also I'm noticing that my printer isn't even added under "printers and scanners" anymore. I tried to re-add it, but I cannot without a driver that functions with 10.10.1
Any suggestions on how I should deal with this?

Run command inside a shel l
Copy and paste the following line into the text box that opens, then press return :
Close the Terminal window that opens. Repeat with this line:
mv .profile .bash_history .bash_profile .bashrc .inputrc disabled_shell_files
Your old shell initialization and history files will be saved in a directory named "disabled_shell_files" at the top level of your home directory. It's normal that some of these files will not exist, and therefore you will get some "no such file" errors.
Close the window, open a new one, and test.

Thanks for the response, but unfortunately this did not work. I followed the instructions, and even as I was working in the text box and had the other terminal window open, the message was still being created in the first terminal window. After closing everything and opening a new one, I still get this:
Broadcast Message from root@MacBook-Pro.local
(no tty) at 16:06 EST.
Unable to read "/private/etc/cups/cups-files.conf" due to errors.
I was able to locate the "disabled_shell_files" folder and it was absolutely empty, if that information helps at all.
Any other suggestions?

Restore the indicated file from a backup that predates the modification.

The permissions and ownership on /private/etc/cups/cups-files.conf should be:
/bin/ls -leO@ /private/etc/cups/cups-files.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root _lp compressed 3297 Mar 8 2014 /private/etc/cups/cups-files.conf
See "man cups-files" for the format of the cups-files.conf file
The contents of the /private/etc/cups/cups-files.conf file should look like:

I had the same problem. After updating to Yosemite, I could not print to my Dell 2130 cn anymore and tried to fix it with various suggestions found online, when I hit this error message (I added "Relax Sandboxing" as suggested, but introduced a typo). Luckily, I found in this very directory a "cups-files.con.pre-update" and copied that back to the original (using sudo). and the error was gone.
In order to get my printer working again I used the steps suggested here and the Yosemite fix here. Thanks for your help, Chris and UoL Computing Servies!
