I have an image of a server taken from Acronis trueimage, and I thought I could use COnverter on the *.tib on the file, and rip a VM of the image?
Am I even on this planet with this notion? I am thinking No, but still ni solar system. Please let me know if you have any clue whether this is possible.

I just checked the version of Acronis we are running and it is "True Image Echo Server". This may be the upgrade to True Image 9.
I checked the link to the VMWare manual, and it does not really talk about the steps involved on getting the "tib" to a VM.

I don't know about Acronis specifically, but the workaround for any unsupported imaging program is to create a new virtual machine. Then restore the image into the virtual machine just like a physical machine. Then run Converter choosing "Configure Machine" instead of import. In essense, you're doing the copying of the image data into the virtual machine instead of having Converter do it for you.

The Acronis Univernal Restore option will also work quite well to inject the correct SCSI drivers when you restore an image into a VM.

Specify the exact product & version of Acronis that you are using. Also specify the product & version of VMware that you are using. If you are using VMware Converter standalone version 3.0.3 you can import Acronis images (.tib) created with:
1. Acronis True Image 10. (This is found under their "Home products")
2. Acronis True Image Echo 9.1 (This is found under their "Small Business products")
As you will notice the current versions of these Acronis products are 11 and 9.5 respectively. These are currently not supported by VMware converter. It might be possible to convert these tibs to VMDK using Acronis products and you will have to reference the Acronis product manual for that.

A file conversion is just a change of the file that was created in one program (TIB file) to a form intelligible for another program (i.e. VMDK format). There are many websites offering file conversion of TIB to VMDK files "Online" - without having to download a special program to your computer. However, if you have not found the appropriate TIB file converter in the Internet, you can use our list of programs to cope with the conversion of the TIB to VMDK file.

How to convert the TIB file to VMDK?
If you have already downloaded one of the converters and installed it on your computer, you can proceed to the appropriate conversion process of TIB to VMDK. Handling all the programs is usually very intuitive and is based on the same pattern of conduct. We will briefly discuss a few steps that you always need to go through while changing the format of the TIB file:
- Please indicate on your computer the source file TIB, the format of which you are going to change
- Load the TIB file to the application
- Select the output format of the VMDK file (the one that we want to achieve)
- Select the location to save the output file VMDK on the disk (the place where the program will save the converted file)
- Confirm conversion
- Wait for a moment
- Enjoy the converted VMDK file that can be found in the location selected in step 4

- Acronis True Image;
- StarWind V2V Image Converter;
- VMware Workstation.
Acronis
Acronis’a

I have a Acronis True Image Backup file extension .tib that I am trying to convert so I can use it in a WorkStation VM.
To convert the file I open VMware vCenter Converter Standalone.
I then click on Convert machine in the tool bar. This opens up a Conversion window.
I then select Backup image or third-party virtual machine from the Select source type pull down menu.
I then Browse to the Virtual machine file. (VM file is located at C:\Local_disk(C).tib.
I then click on the Next button where I get a message that tells me the source parameters are invalid (See attached jpg file picture).
Once I get this message I cannot progress any further in converting this image file.
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

it may help to format the disk with another VM or LiveCD that can handle uninitialized vmdks
also make sure you set the guestOS to Linux while trying the AcronisLiveCD

I set the OS to Linux Other 32-bit and the same thing happens.
How do you use another VM to format the disk or use LiveCD to format the disk?

Simply add the vmdk that you want to use with the Acronis CD to another VM temporarily.
Then open diskmanagement and partition the drive.
When done power off that helper VM and re-assign the vmdk to the VM you want to boot with the Acronis LiveCD

You maybe getting the blue screen because many OEM PC will create a small partition and then install the OS on a second large partition.
When you restore this tib backup to the VM disk, the VM only want one partition on the disk so it put the OS partition on the VM disk. So you need to edit the boot.ini file to point to first partition and not the second partition as it did when it was backed up.
I have done this using a bootcd that then will let you edit the files on the VM hard drive.
Also Acronis True Image 10 or 11 has a convertoer program also. Ihave used that many time and it to works good.

I think I tried Acronis 10 CD converter option, but it looks like you need to have drivers available for the process in a folder (similar to sysprep)..
An interesting issue I saw yesterday.
If I build a VM and select Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, I can’t get the Acronis 10 CD to boot.
But if I build a VM and select Windows Server STD 2003, the Acronis 10 CD boots..

I created a second disk on a Windows 2003 Ent VM and formatted it.
I then built a Linux VM using the the formatted disk,,
But, the Aconis 10 Boot CD still does not boot the software,,I still get the ISOLINUX message and the process stops at this point without booting the Aconis 10 software

The easy way is to install Acronis on a PC, like Xp and then start arconis in windows and run the converter from inside acronis. Point it to the .tib image and it will create a .vmdk file. You then just copy that into a VM you create in VMware workastation.
That is how i done it.
If you want to restore the .tib image into a VM than you will need to create a Bart PE boot disk that have the VMware compatible drives added to it and acronis.
I had done this at on time but nolonger do it that way.
Or you could use a utility that lets you mount a VM disk file in windows (like vdk.exe it think, one of the guys here made that) and then restore to that mounted disk. Then unmount and copy it back into the VM folder if needed.
