GTA V (offline), Rocket League (offline), DOOM, Just Cause 4, Need For Speed: Most Wanted (2012), Portal 2, Hitman 2, Distance, Broforce.

RT/RB гашетки I/II группы
When a game allows such thorough binding customization it comes down to personal taste.
My favorite controller setup is this one by far.
would it work the same for an xbox 360 controller?
I have been using in my personal opinion a MUCH better setup since launch and I do almost exclusive PvP. This will give you a pseudo dual-stick experience that is intuitive for the other play styles.
use the D-pad for power control (down is reset)
triggers for up/down throttle
Y for target forward
Y + dpad up = cargo scoop
Y + dpad down = landing gear
A = FA on/off (toggle)
bumpers are fire groups (and to shoot), pressing right bumper will deploy hardpoints
BACK = deploy/retract hardpoints
left stick horizontal = roll
left stick vertical = pitch
left stick push = comms panel
right stick horizontal = yaw
right stick vertical = thrust up/down
right stick press = free look
B + Dpad up = cycle fire groups
B + Dpad left/right = left/right panels in your ship -B + Dpad down = boost
Keyboard controls
INS (numpad) = system map
insert = SCB hotkey
delete = chaff hotkey
end = heatsink hotkey
pagedown = silent running
minus key (numpad) = debug camera
All keys are correctly bound for the galmap using both sticks and the triggers for zoom in/out
Landing overrides:
Arrow keys for forward/left/right/backward thrust
right Ctrl = thrust down
right Shift = thrust up
I have used these controls since launch and they are extremely intuitive. I can also upload my config if anyone would just like to put it into their game files.
Don't take this the wrong way, but keyboard bindings? No way.
Main benefit of using a gamepad is you can bind everything to it so you never have to take your fingers off the controls for even a second. My config brings all the boys to the yard.
I disagree, but if it works for you, then that's cool.
Triggers for throttle is really neat idea and something I was wondering about. Guess I'll actually give it a shot.
I use almost the same binding as this. The two big differences I can think of off the top of my head is I have "left stick press" set to kill thrust and "double stick press" set to boost. Having the kill thrust command easily accessible has made life a bit easier. The double press can sometimes activate free-look so I might experiment with changing it up.
What I like about this setup over OP's is that most of the movement controls are accessible without having to move thumbs. I really wish I could bind yaw or horizontal movement to foot pedals. I spent the first 10-15 hours just experimenting with controls and can't find a great way to integrate every axis of movement. When I switched to a non-combat ship I bound the bumpers to lateral movement instead of weapons which worked well enough. For combat ships I end up sacrificing horizontal movement which I have to make up for with excessive rolling and vertical movement.
Considering my struggle for an effective control scheme I have a hard time imagining switching to a single flight stick, like HOTAS, when a controller has two joysticks. I get the accuracy bit, but it seems like you lose some access to different axes of movement.
EDIT: I also have Lbumper+Rbumper to toggle flight assist. This was a late addition to my control scheme but one of my favorites.
Hi, I've been playing around with best gamepad setting for Elite to fit there everything that I want and so far it doesn't work so well. I use mostly standard scheme based on Advance Controller 2 preset and it's useful to certain degree but the main problem for me are ABYX colored buttons that I want to use as as modifiers.
You see, as an example I did set Y to FSD jump and tried to set Y+DPad_Left to Galaxy map and Y+DPad_Right to System map but the moment I press Y my hyperdrives start and the game disregards other button presses. Similiarly, I set A to select nearest target and tried to set A+DPad_Up to cycle through next ships but the moment I release Dpad_Up the selection just returns back to original target. And finally, I learnt the hard way that setting any other button combination to B previously assigned to boosters is really not a good choice.
Is there some toggle in settings that changes how modifiers work (eg. for the game to wait after the button is released to perfom and action) or do I have to leave those ABYX buttons unassigned for those combinations to work? Also, is there a way to use middle Xbox Guide button in the game? (so far the config menu doesn't even register it). Is there generally recognized gamepad button layout the works the best for the most people?
Turn on context menus under miscellaneous options.
You could also just use the default context control scheme.
Ok, thanks, will try that. I mean, for me the gamepad is the better option than mouse and keyboard in this game, it's just that default presets lacks some important commands and would like to have everything on gampad. Could be there is some odd toggle in advanced scheme somewhere, guess I just try to customize other default control schemes instead.
And I was just wondering if there are some good working button combination presets most players are using.
Thanks again, it worked! I really had context menus turned off and now it works like charm. Who would have thought one little toggle hidden deep in the menus would lead to all this. Now I can finally do a proper gamepad setup based on everyone's tips here.
So I noticed the same problem your having when I was mapping my controls. Sometimes the game just has issues with the context menu( holding the xbay buttons).
For my controls I had this setup.( Might not be exactly the way I had it been using the HOTAS lately)
X - no input X+up - deploy/retract hard points X+down - charge ecm X+left - heat sink X+right - shield cell bank X+LB - chaff X+RB - next fire group
A - select target ahead A+up - select next hostile A+down - select next system in route A+left - select previous ship A+right - select next ship A+LB - cycle previous sub system A+RB - cycle next sub system
Y - fighter engage target Y+up - hyper space (high wake) Y+down - super cruise (low wake) Y+left - Galaxy map Y+right - system map Y+LB - fighter dock Y+RB - fighter command panel
B - boost B+up - cargo scoop B+down - landing gear B+left - ship lights B+right - camera mode B+LB - silent running B+RB - no input (free space)
Lb+RB - throttle 0%
Left stick click - flight assist off
Right stick click - toggle head look Rsc+up - comms panel Rsc+down - bottom panel ( forgot what it's called) Rsc+left - targeting panel Rsc+right - functions panel
I think that's it. This layout worked well for me and I don't recall having the original issue with this setup. Let me know how this works. o7
Yeah, my main problem so far is that with some combinations I have to left those modifier buttons (ABYX, but also some other) unassigned otherwise it triggers basic action too. To me it kinda undermines the usability of gamepad mapping because either I can use basic buttons alone or I can use them as combinations modifiers, not both. True, I can map them to noncoflicting actions but it takes a lot trial and error to do that right and so far I'm mostly unsuccessful. Could be due to how face buttons works on hardware level (is it another dpad internally?), dunno.
Thanks for your tips though, I'll definitely try that out.
Off the top of my head, I use the following combos:
(Note, these get re-evaluated often, as my needs evolve)
LB+RB = 50% throttle
A = Select target in front
A+LB = 0% throttle
A+RB = chaff
A+← = Target prev hostile
A+→ = Target next hostile
A+↑ = Target next subsystem
A+↓ = Target prev subsystem
B = unassigned
B+LB = Silent running
B+RB = Boost
B+← = Flight Assist Off
B+→ = Camera
B+↑ = Cargo scoop
B+↓ = Landing Gear
X = Deploy hard points
X+LB = Prev firegroup
X+RB = Next firegroup
X+D Pad = various panels
Y = Frameshift
Y+LB = Heat sink Y+← = Target next system in route
Y+→ = System map
Y+↑ = Supercruise
Y+↓ = Hyperspace
L-click + R-click = head look
R-click = alternate controls
I'm going to be revisiting a bunch of these soon, as I try and add more thrusters into my controls, and move to being able to FA-Off more
Edit: corrected a couple and added ones I'd forgotten
I found it useful to add thrusters changes to alternative controls and switch between them on fly why I need it (and landing overrides - when landing gear gets deployed - also works nicely). But it's nice enough setup too, I'll probably use some of these too if I get those modifiers ABYX buttons working.
Turn OFF context menus under miscellaneous options. This will free up your controls for proper customisation.
You can have a ridiculous amount of combos on the pad. I'll see what I can remember from my set up, give you an idea of how customisable it can get.
Fire 1 & 2 = Triggers (L2 R2)
Throttle up/down 25% = Shoulders (L1 R2)
Cockpit look = Select/Back
Pip control = Dpad
L3 click stick = Boost
R3 click stick = Flight assist on/off
Target threat = Dpad Up + Y
Target next ship = Dpad Left + Y
Target nearest = Dpad down + Y
Target previous subsystem = Dpad right + Y
Target straight ahead = X+A
Left Panel = Dpad left + B
Right panel = Dpad Right + B
Cock panel = Select + B
Email panel = B+L1
System Map = Y+L1
Galaxy Map = Y+R1
Landing gear toggle = B+Dpad up Cargo scoop = B+Dpad down
Hardpoints toggle = A+Dpad up
Strafe left = A+L1 (or L2 when landing gear is down)
Strafe left = A+R1 (or R2 when landing gear is down)
Ship lights = X+Dpad up
Scanner range up/down = X+Left or right dpad
Silent running = X+Dpad down
Frameshift (local) = B+Y
Frameshift (stellar jump) = A+B
Fire chaff = X+R1
Fire Shield cell bank = X+L1
Fire heat sink = X+L2
Crew member attack = select+R1
Crew member hold = select+Y
Crew member orders = select+A
Crew member free fire = select+B
Crew member defend = select+L1
I'm forgetting a bunch of binds (like most of the A+combos, I can't remember those right now), and can't be arsed to type out any of the SRV ones, but you get the idea. I never go near the keyboard except to chat. The trick is to have the four facia buttons bound ONLY to combos so you don't set something off by hitting the button on it's own.
Having said that, I also have pip management set to A,B,X and Y in addition to the dpad, as this means I can adjust them mid-combat without moving my left thumb from the stick, causing a pause in control. It is much quicker, but you have to keep on top of them, as other combos will adjust those values.
I'd also advise setting speed in increments of 25%. You almost never need finer control than that, and when you can, you can set alternative landing toggles.
Personally, I have throttle up/down on the shoulder pads, and Y and A for fine tune thrusting when the landing gear is down.
