A d converter что это
There are several methods for analog to digital conversion. Below we cover a few examples.
A/D Converters
An A/D converter is a device that converts analog signals (usually voltage) obtained from environmental (physical) phenomena into digital format
Conversion involves a series of steps, including sampling, quantization, and coding.
Flash Method
This type of A/D converter utilizes 2N-1 comparators (for an N bit converter) to compare the analog signal with successive reference voltages. The results are then converted into digital format using an encoder.
- Analog signals are converted into digital signals directly (since the comparators themselves are the sampling devices), making a Sample and Hold circuit unnecessary.
- This allows for extremely fast conversion (with sampling frequencies above 1GHz possible).
- However, the relatively larger size and power consumption (due to the number of comparators are required: 2N-1) limit resolution to around 8bits.
Basic Operation of a D/A Converter
A D/A converter takes a precise number (most commonly a fixed-point binary number) and converts it into a physical quantity (example: voltage or pressure). D/A converters are often used to convert finite-precision time series data to a continually varying physical signal.
An ideal D/A converter takes abstract numbers from a sequence of impulses that are then processed by using a form of interpolation to fill in data between impulses. A conventional D/A converter puts the numbers into a piecewise constant function made up of a sequence of rectangular functions that is modeled with the zero-order hold.
A D/A converter reconstructs original signals so that its bandwidth meets certain requirements. With digital sampling comes quantization errors that create low-level noise which gets added to the reconstructed signal. The minimum analog signal amplitude that can bring about a change in the digital signal is called the Least Significant Bit (LSB), while the (rounding) error that occurs between the analog and digital signals is referred to as quantization error.
Approximation Method
This method compares the sampled analog input with the converter's output in succession, starting with the MSB.
- The analog input signal is sampled (S&H)
- A successive approximation register (SAR), which is designed to supply an approximate digital code to the internal DAC, is initialized so that the most significant bit (MSB) is set to '1'.
- The digital values from the SAR are converted into equivalent analog values by the internal DAC.
- The sampled input voltage is compared with the DAC output voltage.
- If the sampled voltage > DAC output voltage → MSB = 1
- If the sampled voltage < DAC output voltage → MSB = 0
The digital conversion is completed by repeating the operation up to LSB.
Ⅲ Types
There are many types of analog-to-digital converters, which can be divided into indirect ADCs and direct ADCs according to the different working principles.
Indirect ADC is to first convert the input analog voltage into time or frequency, and then convert these intermediate quantities into digital quantities, the commonly used indirect ADC is Dual Slope ADC whose intermediate quantity is the time.
Delta-Encoded Conversion
A delta-encoded ADC has an up-down counter. This counter that feeds a digital to analog converter (DAC). The input signal and the DAC both go to a comparator. The comparator controls the counter. The comparator uses negative feedback from the circuit to adjust the counter until the DAC's output is close to the input signal. From there, the number is read from the counter. Delta converters have wide ranges, as well as high resolution, but the conversion time depends on the input signal level.
Delta converters are good choices when it comes to reading real-world signals. Most signals from physical systems are not sporadic. Some converters combine the delta and successive approximation approaches which works well when high frequencies are known to be small in magnitude.
An integrated ADC creates a saw-tooth signal that ramps up, then falls to zero. When the ramp starts, a timer starts counting. When the ramp voltage and the input match, a comparator fires. At this point, the timer's value is recorded.
The ramp time is typically sensitive to temperature because the circuit generating the ramp is often a simple oscillator. Calibrating the timed ramp, or using a clocked counter driving a DAC and then use the comparator to preserve the counter's value are two solutions for this.

2 Successive approximation ADC (SAR ADC)
The successive approximation ADC is another kind of direct ADC, which also generates a series of comparative voltages VR. Unlike the flash ADC, it generates comparative voltages one by one, and compares them with the input voltages one by one, and performs the analog-to-digital conversion in the way of gradual approximation. The successive approximation ADC is bit by bit comparison for each conversion, and needs (n + 1) beat pulse to complete, so it is slower than the conversion speed of the parallel comparison ADC, much faster than the double fractional product ADC, which belongs to the medium-speed ADC device. In addition, it needs to use much fewer components than the flash type, so it is one of the more widely used integrated ADC.

Conversion time - i.e., the time required for each sample, characterizing the ADC's conversion speed, which is related to the ADC's clock frequency, sampling period, and conversion period.
Data output methods - e.g. parallel output, serial output.
ADC types - as mentioned above, there are many types of ADCs, and different types have different performance limits.
Operating voltage - attention needs to be paid to the operating voltage range of the ADC, the ability to measure negative voltages directly, etc.

3 Dual Slope ADC
Dual Slope ADC belongs to indirect ADC, which integrates the input sampling voltage and reference voltage twice to get a time interval proportional to the average value of the sampling voltage. At the same time, it counts the standard clock pulse (CP) with a counter in this time interval, and the counter output result is the corresponding digital quantity. The advantages of double-integral ADC are strong anti-interference ability, good stability, and can realize high-precision analog-to-digital conversion. The main disadvantage is the low conversion speed, so this type of converter is mostly used in instrumentation which requires high precision but not high conversion speed, such as multi-bit high-precision digital DC voltmeter.

1 Flash ADC
As a result of the flash ADC using the magnitude of the parallel comparison, the output code is also generated in parallel at the same time, so the conversion speed is its outstanding advantage, while the conversion speed and the number of output code bits independent. Flash ADC’s disadvantages are high cost and high power consumption. Because of the n-bit output ADC, which requires 2n resistors, (2n-1) comparators and D flip-flops, and a complex coding network, the number of its components increases geometrically with the number of bits. Therefore, this kind of ADC is suitable for situations where high speed and low resolution are required.

Ⅰ Introduction
Analog signal refers to the information expressed by continuously changing physical quantities, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, length, current, voltage, etc. We usually call the analog signal a continuous signal, which can have infinitely many different values in a certain time range. The digital signal is a discrete and discontinuous signal in terms of values.
The circuit that converts an analog signal into a digital signal is called an analog-to-digital converter (referred to as A/D converter or ADC). Therefore, generally, there are 4 processes during A/D conversion: sampling, holding, and Quantization, and Coding. In the actual circuit, some of these processes are combined, for example, sampling, and holding. Quantizing and Encoding are often achieved simultaneously in the conversion process.
Now the software, radio, digital image acquisition are required to have high-speed A/D sampling to ensure effectiveness and accuracy, general measurement, and control systems also want to make a breakthrough in accuracy. The wave of digitization of mankind has driven the continuous transformation of the A/D converter, and the A/D converter is the pioneer of mankind to achieve digitalization. A/D converter has undergone many technological innovations since more than 30 years ago from flash ADC, SAR ADC, integrating ADC, and the newly developed sigma-delta ADC and flow line ADC in recent years. They have their own advantages and disadvantages and can meet the use of different applications.
1 Conversion accuracy
(1) Resolution
The resolution of an A/D converter is expressed in bits of the output binary (or decimal) number. It indicates the ability of the A/D converter to distinguish between input signals. Theoretically speaking, the n-bit output of the A/D converter can distinguish between 2n different levels of input analog voltage, and the minimum value that can distinguish between input voltages is 1/2n of the full-scale input. For example, if the output of the A/D converter is 8 binary digits and the maximum value of the input signal is 5V, then the converter should be able to distinguish the minimum voltage of the input signal is 19.53mV.
(2) Conversion error
The conversion error is usually given in the form of the maximum value of the output error. It represents the difference between the actual digital output of the A/D converter and the theoretical output of digital quantity. It is commonly expressed as a multiple of the lowest effective bit. For example, the relative error is given as no greater than ±LSB/2, which indicates that the error between the actual output digital quantity and the theoretically desirable output digital quantity is less than half a word of the lowest effective bit.
Analog Signal to Digital Signal Conversion Methods
Sampling: Sampling is the process of taking amplitude values of the continuous analog signal at discrete time intervals (sampling period Ts).
[Sampling Period Ts = 1/Fs (Sampling Frequency)]
Sampling is performed using a Sample and Hold (S&H) circuit. Quantization: Quantization involves assigning a numerical value to each sampled amplitude value from a range of possible values covering the entire amplitude range (based on the number of bits).
[Quantization error: Sampled Value - Quantized Value] Coding: Once the amplitude values have been quantized they are encoded into binary using an Encoder.ROHM offers a broad portfolio of data converters, including A/D converters, D/A converters, and Audio CODECs.
Numerous configurations exist for ADC (A/D converter). We cover the basic configurations below.
Pipeline Method
In the case of a 1.5bit/stage configuration, the following processes are repeated in order from Stage 1 that determines MSB via pipeline operation (VREF: Reference Voltage).
- Analog input is sampled (using an S&H circuit)
- At the same time the analog input is converted by an A/D converter into a 3-value digital format (1.5bit). (Here the digital output stage is defined.)
- Analog input ≦ -VREF/4 → D="00"
- -VREF/4 < Analog input ≦ +VREF/4 → D="01"
- +VREF/4 < Analog input →D="10"
- D="00" → DAC output:-VREF/2
- D="01" → DAC output:0
- D="10" → DAC output:+VREF/2
Once processing of Stage N that determines LSB is completed, the delay between each stage is corrected then digital conversion completed by adding the respective digital output.
Characteristics:
- High resolution enabled (up to 16bit)
- High-speed conversion possible (200MHz max. sampling frequency)
- There is a necessary wait time until the digital signal is output (based on bipolar operation), making this impractical for applications requiring real-time processing (i.e. control).
2 Conversion time
The conversion time is the time it takes for an A/D converter to convert the control signal from the time it arrives at the time it gets a stable digital signal at the output.
Successive Approximation Conversion
A successive-approximation ADC settles on a final voltage range, by using a comparator to reject ranges of voltages. The way successive approximation functions is by comparing the input voltage constantly to a known reference voltage until the best approximation is achieved. At each step in this process, a binary value of the approximation is stored in a successive approximation register (SAR). A reference voltage is used for the SAR. If the input voltage is 150V and the reference voltage is 100V, then in the 1st clock cycle the voltage out is negative (because 100V is less than 150V). The voltage might increase by say 30V in the 2nd clock cycle, to 130V. This value still a negative value. The 3rd clock cycle results in 160V. Because of this, the output exceeds the input voltage and is positive. The binary form 110 is the result.
When the number of bit cycles is increased and the increment rise decreases, it is possible to construct an accurate A/D converter. The type of ADC is more complex than other designs.
Ⅱ Basic Principle
ADC (analog to digital converter) conversion process
ADC conversion process
The basic conversion principle of the ADC is divided into four processes.
(1) Anti-aliasing, which can be understood as a low-pass filter.
(2) Sampling and holding circuit.
Sampling and Holding
Sampling is the process of replacing the original signal that was continuous in time with a sequence of signal sample values at regular intervals, i.e., discretizing the analog signal in time. The results of the sampling are stored until the next sampling, and this process called holding.
Quantizing and Encoding
Quantizing is to convert the continuous amplitude of the analog signal into a finite number of discrete values with a certain interval using a finite number of amplitude values that approximate the original continuous changing amplitude value. Encoding is in accordance with certain rules, to represent the quantized value with binary numbers and then convert it into a binary or multi-valued digital signal stream. The digital signals thus obtained can be transmitted over digital lines such as cables, microwave trunks, satellite channels, etc.
This process of an analog signal converted into a digital signal through the ADC is called quantizing. Due to the quantization of the output digital signal is limited to a number of bits, the output digital signal and the analog signal you sample will have an error, known as quantization error. For an N-bit ADC, assuming that its full-scale voltage Vref, Vref ADC is divided into 2N intervals, the width of the interval with LSB ( (last significant bit) indicates LSB=Vref/2N.
For example, Vref=8V, ADC is 3 bits, LSB=1, so each interval is 1V. The resolution of this ADC is 1V.
000 means voltage 0 ≤ V < 1
001 means voltage 1 ≤ V < 2
010 means voltage 2 ≤ V < 3
011 means voltage 3 ≤ V < 4
100 means voltage 4 ≤ V < 5
101 means voltage 5 ≤ V < 6
110 represents voltage 6 ≤ V < 7
111 represents voltage 7 ≤ V < 8

Basic Operation of an A/D Converter
Now, let's take a look at the basic operation of an A/D converter.
The A/D converter breaks up (samples) the amplitude of the analog signal at discrete intervals, which are then converted into digital values. The resolution of an analog to digital converter (indicating the number of discrete values it can produce over a range of analog values) is typically expressed by the number of bits. In the above case of a 3bit A/D converter, the upper value (b2) is referred to as the Most Significant Bit (MSB) and the lowest value (b0) the Least Significant Bit (LSB).
The graph below shows the relationship between the analog input and digital output.
In addition, the first digital change point (000→001) below 0.5LSB is the zero scale, while the last digital change point (110→111) is termed full scale and the interval from zero to full scale referred to as the full scale range.
A/D and D/A Requirements
Electrically sophisticated and high-speed processing are performed digitally in CPUs and DSPs.
Natural phenomena are converted to digital signals using an A/D converter for digital signal processing, then converted back to analog signals via a D/A converter.

Flash Conversion
When an ADC (analog to digital converter) has a comparator that fires for each decoded voltage range, it is not as a direct conversion ADC or flash ADC. A code for each voltage is generated from the comparator bank to a logic circuit for each voltage range. Direct conversion is fast, typically only 8 bits of resolution (256bit comparators) or less, A large, expensive circuit is usually needed. ADCs of this type have a high input capacitance, a large die size, and are prone to produce glitches on the output (out-of-sequence code being output can cause glitches). They are often used for fast signals like video.
