Outlook on the web for exchange server 2016
Some of our linked mailbox users are not able to change their password in Outlook Web App. They get the message they're not authorized to change their password. This is strange because other users don't have this issue and I can't find a setting that can disable or enable this per user.
What could be the problem?

Some or all of the linked mailboxes? Traditionally, linked mailboxes have never been able to change their password in OWA. This was true in previous versions.
Only some. As far as I can see the problematic accounts all have the same primary email address domain and reside in the same OU in the account forest.
Others are able to change their password without problems.
Is inheritance blocked on that OU and/or any funky GPOs applied to it?
I'm not sure. This AD is not under our care. We host Exchange for them. Any idea how I can let them check if permissions are correct?
I'm not sure what permissions need to be there for this functionality to work but I guess 'Change Password' should be present for SELF on the user object. This probably is the case, as they are able to change their password from within Windows.
are they only users those are getting this problem ? if yes then please tell them to check Group policy for password change policy ?
To enable password changing in linked mailbox, you have to make sure the following:
1. The test based on two way trusts between the two forests;
2. You need to open port: 139, 445, 389, 88 for the communication between two forests;
3. You need to add FQDN of the account forest into DNS suffixes in CAS server Network Connections;
4. You need to modify the password policy on the account forest, set minimum password age as “0 days”.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, but password change already works for other OU's in the same forest, so this must be in place already. I will check the password policy in the GPO though.

It seems a password policy issue which can be resolved by modifying the Group Policy.
Please co-ordinate with your AD team only.

Is the error they get "You don´t have permission to change your password"?
If it is, then they have the setting "User cannot change password" set of their UserAccount.

I'm not sure what the exact English message is, its in Dutch. They are able to change their password from windows, so I guess password changes are enabled?
I would check the setting in both Source and Target.
Also make sure that the permisson on the account (Securtity Tab in ADUC) has "Include inheritable permissions from the object´s paret" set. If you find that "SELF" only has one or two permission set, then you must restore the permission to Default. Martina Miskovic

if they are able to reset password from windows then it is not password policy issue ? As per above error .. Can you select one use who is not able to reset the password and check his/her account attribute ? Check is he/she having permission to change the password or not ?

использовать сочетание букв верхнего и нижнего регистров;
использовать и цифры, и буквы;
This document is how to change passwords for an Exchange 2016 or 2019 mailbox.
There are 2 methods for changing a password when you have an Exchange 2016 or 2019 mailbox.
- Change the password through OWA Exchange 2016, or OWA Exchange 2019
- Change the password through the HC Panel.
- OWA must be enabled on your Exchange mailbox. If you cannot log in to OWA, you must ask the owner of your account to enable this.
OWA Password Change Method
Step 1. Login to OWA and select the gear icon at the top right and select the Options.
Step 2. On the left under General , select My Account.
Step 3. On the bottom right, there will be a link to “Change your password“.
Step 4. Enter in your CURRENT password, repeat it two more times and select SAVE to make your changes.
Panel Change Method
3. You will then see your organizations listed there. Towards the right side you can select Mailboxes for the appropriate organization you wish to modify.
4. Now there will be a listing of mailboxes, select the “Dashboard” button for the appropriate user you wish to change the password for.
5. Now you will see the users details. You can select the green button to “Change Password“
6. Enter in the new password 2 times and select “Save” to complete the process. You may also set it so that the user must change it on their first login.
Securing your email account is a critical measure needed to safeguard your online privacy. Defining a strong password and storing it in a password keeping tool is a good first step. It is recommended to proactively change your password periodically to ensure your account stays protected.
Note: this process can be executed not only on your PC, but also for your cellular phone (be it Iphone or Android) as well as tablets (iPads, Android, Fire).
Change your password in Outlook 2016
Our next step will be the configure the desktop edition of Outlook (the one installed on your personal computer) to work with the modified password.
Note: Look below for the updated procedure for Outlook 2019.
Microsoft Exchange users
Important Note: The procedure we outlined above won’t work when accessing your email through an Exchange Server. In this case, your Windows domain credentials (the ones you use in order to login to your computer) are used to control access to your email. You can set a password to your Offlline folders though.

Kindly proceed as following:
Change your Outlook data file password (Windows)
We often recommend to periodically archive your Outlook emails for offline usage using the so called Outlook Data Files (PST files). By leveraging PST files, we are able to quickly access our archived items for further reference or make periodic backups as needed.
One more important topic, which is often overlooked by Outlook users, is the fact that Outlook data files have to be secured as well.
Here’s how we manage the password settings of our PST files.
- First off, go ahead an login to Outlook.
- Hit File, then select the Info Tab.
- Under Account Information, hit the Account Settings button.
- Then select Account Settings and go to the Data Files tab
- You’ll then notice the list of data Files that are available to your Microsoft Outlook client.
- Highlight your data file. Note: You might have one or more Archive folders. Make sure to highlight the correct one.
- Now hit the Settings button.
- Then, go ahead and hit Change Password.
- Type your old password to the Data file, leave it blank if you had no password set before.
- Now type your new password twice. Make sure to backup your new password in a secure place.
- Hit OK.
- Starting now, Outlook will prompt you for a password whenever trying to access your Offline Data File.
- It’s highlight recommended to change your password periodically to ensure that access to your data files is secured.
Note: You might have more than one data files in your PC. Make sure to secure each of the files with a password.
4 thoughts on “Outlook: reset and change passwords in Office 2019 / 365 / 2016”
I have tried the above steps to update my password for Office Outlook several times, but I can’t get it to work. I have office 365. It’s a yearly subscription. I assume I have Outlook 2019, but maybe I only have 2016. Is there another way I can change the password?
Thanks,
Josh
It doesn’t work for Outlook 2019. ‘Change’ does not produce a password box.
MS Outlook, File>Account Settings>Manage Profiles
To change my comcast password in Outlook I had to change it in File: Account Settings: Manage Profiles…. not as above.

Basic, FBA
get-ecpvirtualdirectory | set-ecpvirtualdirectory -FormsAuthentication $true -BasicAuthentication $true
get-owavirtualdirectory | set-owavirtualdirectory -FormsAuthentication $true -BasicAuthentication $true

get-ecpvirtualdirectory | fl *internal* , *external*
get-owavirtualdirectory | fl *internal* , *external*
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>get-ecpvirtualdirectory | fl *internal* , *external*
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>get-owavirtualdirectory | fl *internal* , *external*
