Touka’s Kagune Tutorial
To begin, it’s always good to make a pattern from normal cardboard. Take into account how big you would like it to be! When building this pattern, make sure to leave the ends of each wing (the part that will eventually attach to your back) wide and leave more room than you think you might need. You can always trim it later, but it’s good to have extra length in case you need more room.
This pattern is to determine how much foam board you will need. Now you should be good to go out and get your foam board. I ended up getting and using 4 sheets that I got at the dollar store, but you can even find it cheaper. Also, I am referring to the elmers type of foam board where it is two pieces of paper sandwiching a dense foam. Do not buy “foam board” meant for insulation! Also, you will see in my Kagune that the sheet I purchased was not big enough for the bigger “wing”, and a lot of foam board will not come in big enough dimensions to make this possible; however, I over came that via gluing more layers on to the bottom and top of the bigger wing.
Cutting the Shapes
Exacto knife time! Foam board can be quite tricky, but I found that staying as linear as possible while cutting helps a lot. This means sometimes breaking rounded bits into smaller pieces with a line down the middle of the rounded section. This is hard to example so please see the picture!
Please use a cutting board, it helps a lot! Once you have the base shapes, you can cut some more shapes out of the foam board and attach via glue (see next section). Try not to attach too many pieces to where you expect it to attach to your back. This process can take a while, but it is worth it. I went back with some sharp scissors in some places, but please, DO NOT USE SCISSORS FOR THE WHOLE PROJECT. It tends to bend and break the foam board and will in general make the whole Kagune less stable. An blade like an a exacto knife or box cutter will be best. Just press down hard and wiggle the cut pieces out! Try not to rip too much of the paper off if possible (although this definitely occurred on some of mine) as the glue we use will melt the foam, but will be perfectly okay on paper.
Let’s talk glue. Now, you could hot glue this whole thing, and you will see on the previous picture that I did hot glue around some of the pieces to give extra support, however, the most durable option here will be contact cement. Make sure to look up the rules of contact cement, I will briefly touch on them but please do be careful as it is a chemical and can cause damage if used improperly. Don’t be too scared though, you basically have to do it in an area with good circulation (not a closed off room with no windows or anything) and just don’t lick it or anything. It is okay if it touches your skin but do avoid it and wash immediately.
Using the contact cement:
The basics of contact cement is you apply the product to both sections/the pieces of “wing” you are gluing together. This will almost always be a smaller piece of “wing/Kagune” being attached to the main “wing”. So, apply carefully the cement to both the sections and let dry for 15 minutes, but not longer than 2 hours. Then, you gotta put em together.
Contact cement is called contact cement for a reason. Once you touch those two pieces together, you won’t ever be able to shift them around. Unlike hot glue where you can kind of still shift it around to sit properly, with contact cement you must carefully place to two pieces together exactly where you need it to be.
The pieces will now be stuck together very nicely. As previously stated, i did go over this in hot glue as well on the edges and even used some hot glue to get that “vein” effect on Touka’s Kagune, but since it will eventually be covered by streamers it does not matter if you do this step or not. I however cannot recommend skipping the hot glue around the glued pieces. It might work if you don’t do it, but it might be less stable. I’m honestly not sure, but if you do it without hot glue let me know if it holds up fine!
Woohoo! Spray paint! Take any basic red spray paint (or purple/blue if you’re doing Ayato’s Kagune) and go to town. Make sure to get the sides and the sides in between the glued down pieces! This took about an entire can for me.
Spray Paint Tips
PLEASE do this outside or in a well ventilated workshop if you happen to have one. If you have never worked with spray paint, please read up on it. I did two layers on each side of the smaller “wing” and three layers on each side of the “big” wing.
You could honestly skip this step too if you need to cut time/cost as the wings will take a bit to dry after you spray them. I just did it to provide a bit more support and for any places that I might have accidentally forgotten to put streamers on. It was very beneficial to have the sides painted though.
Now it’s time for the more complex stuff that is sort of out of my knowledge zone. I will try my best to explain, but please reach out to any one at your local hardware store for help if needed. They may stare at you weirdly if you ask for help with a pair of wings (as I also got a bit of judgement) but, hey, you’ll soon have a cool pair of Kagune wings and they won’t, so jokes on them.
If you would like to use a different option for assembly, such as a harness that goes under your clothes, I can not help you, but please feel free to look up other tutorials here on the app or where ever!
As for me, I used a plexiglass sheet as my back plate, bolts and nuts on a bracket for support, and elastic.
Please do not skimp on the brackets! They help even out the pressure and prevent the wings from just snapping off.
So basically what I did was I got my dad to drill the holes of the brackets and we sandwiched the foam board and plexiglass between two of the brackets (so we used four in total). We then stuck then bolt into the holes and then attached the nut. You will have to use a screwdriver to attach the bolt to the nut and we also used a wrench to make sure the nut was on tight. Here is what it all looked like afterward.
The other side looks similar. I made sure the nuts were on the outside so nothing was sticking into my back too much. I also got my dad to drill some bigger holes at the top for elastic.
Now it’s time to measure and cut the elastic that my (or your arms if you make this) arms will go into. Here is the elastic I used, it isn’t very stretchy but it’s strong. Mine is .75 or 3/4 inch, but you could also use 1 inch elastic, use your best judgment based on your own comfort, body type, and how big/heavy your wings end up being. Keep in mind though that if you use a bigger elastic you may need to drill a bigger hole.
First, I measured around my arm pits (sort of like how a bra strap would fit) and cut two loops that measured that much + about 2 inches just in case. After tying these straps around the wings, they fit nicely and the weight wasn’t too heavy at all. The problem comes from the “wings” being such different sizes. Therefore, I would suggest that you measure and attach the elastic after the entire Kagune is decorated. I ended up adjusting the strap on my shorter wing to be tighter so it wouldn’t sag.
* after note: I did end up with the bigger wing of the Kagune sagging. I did not notice this except in photos. I would suggest adding another strap connecting to your waist with a buckle.
Okay, so I did this step partially before the elastic but either way works. So, I basically went to the dollar store and picked up purple, red, and yellow streamers. I eventually went back and got orange, since Touka’s Kagune is mainly warm colors. I also prepared a lot of torn off red strips ahead of time to prevent me from getting glue all over the streamer roll.
The first thing I did was add a layer of basic red onto the edges of each piece. You can also add a bit of excess of the tips and kind of twirl it to be kind of flame-y (pictured above).
For my solution/glue I used basic tacky glue with a few drops of water. I would experiment with it- you don’t want the mixture to be too wet.
At this point I moved my wings up onto three little cooling racks to keep it a bit more elevated (prevented it from sticking to anything while drying. I can’t explain too much of my process here, but I basically used a paintbrush to glue the paper down and then went over it with additional glue and kind of smushed it where I wanted more texture. Here is the photo I used for reference-
Although this part is only one section of this tutorial, please be aware that this process took a very long time in my case. It involves letting things dry for a while, so it could take days on end. Just be patient and keep working with the material and experiment with what gives the best texture that you’re looking for!
Another tip I have is to kind of smush some of the paper strips into these little vein like shapes to follow the pattern of Touka’s Kagune.
Please excuse my cosplay mess. Anyways, for this “wing” I used a thicker tacky glue mixture to do the initial building up of the colors (probably took like 3 hours?) and then went over everything with a more watery mixture and added details like the veins! I also did a layer of glossy mod podge (I tried matte but I didn’t like the look as much, you can do what you think will look best though!)
Additional Tips for the Papier-mâché
• don’t be afraid to use your fingers to really smoosh the paper down. After a while, I started using gloves because dried glue is a terrible feeling
•use light layers of mod podge, too much will leave little white globs everywhere that won’t dry clear
•you can dry brush some brown paint onto the ends to add depth. I did this where ever two layer met to really add some dimension. Do be careful though as too much will make the Kagune look dirty or just strange.
Here is an example of my “dry brushing”
Actually Wearing the Kagune
These are designed to be worn over clothing. This has the benefit of if you become too annoyed, you can take them off. I have sensory problems so I wanted to be able to easily ditch my Kagune if needed.
Something to be aware of is you suddenly are very wide and have to be more careful of your surroundings. I would suggest just keeping clear of others and maybe ditching the Kagune before hitting the dealers hall (leave them in your hotel room/ car/ make your handler carry them).
*Another afternote: people are sometimes daft and do NOT pay attention to your prop at times. You will also have a bit of a blind spot and may not see people approaching you
These wings are good if you are first experimenting with back props. They’re relatively inexpensive and the materials are accessible. My major flaw here was attachment.I only made two slits at the top which I strung the webbing through and tied off. I would recommend looking up how to make a harness. I’m still learning how to do this, but my recommendation is to have four slits in which two webbings(elastic) are strung through on each side and then sewn together. You could also attach an adjustable slider and or buckles.
