Our company is thinking out purchasing Eplan. I was wondering if members here could good give me the pros or cons on Eplan.
Also I had mentioned Autocad Electrical as a possibly alernative but I don't know how it stacks up against Eplan.
We currently use Autocad Lt for our electrical drawing but now are starting to think of the best course for the future.
Something thats generates drawings, BOM's, panel layout's may be a great tool as we look ahead.
you can go onto autodesk's website and request a 30 day trial
of autocad electrical.
I use AutoCad Electrical, and honestly, I'm not impressed.
I've tried the demo of EPlan, and much prefer it to AutoCad, but we are standardized on AutoCad through the company here.
If I were an OEM or SI, I'd be using EPlan (or anything besides AutoCad Electrical).
In europe eplan is 75%, so easy choice, especially as the education here is using it.
i do use an alternative called elwin, it works same as eplan but it costs a whopping 29 euro.

If you are familiar with Autocadd and have a library built up, stick with AutoCadd Electrical.
3 years ago I looked into Eplan vs AutoCadd. I found Eplan very expensive and difficult to learn.
For what I could buy for 1 Eplan license, I could buy 2 AutoCadd Electrical Network licenses.
I already had AutoCadd skills, so the learning curve for Electrical was much shorter, plus all our drawings were already in AutoCadd format, so I could use our existing library and do the AutoCadd Lisp magic on those drawings.
All our customers' P&ID drawings are in AutoCadd, so using Electrical would could modify those drawings and return them in AutoCadd format.
I just bought ACE 2014 few days ago.
I was thinking E Plan but,It cost twice,No support in Israel, and the most important no support 17 years of Auto Cad data base.
It cost here less then in US 4500 USD.
They have reasonable support.
For AutoCad user the learning curve would be easy.
There is a lot of alternative but for large scale of projects you need E Plan or AutoCad.
I used AutoCAD Electrical for six years, and honestly, now that I'm back on regular AutoCAD, I see very little advantage to it, especially if you have a block library already built up. If your company has any kind of standard that deviates from what Autodesk has decided everyone should use, you will spend a LOT of time setting up the new system. The main difference between ACADe and E-Plan is that ACADe is AutoCAD with a bunch of hack-and-slash lisp routines on top of it, and E-Plan was built from the ground-up as an electrical schematic drawing package.
I've never used E-Plan, but ACADe is a very "you will do things OUR way" kind of program. Let's say you want to add a symbol for a new component. You can do it, but it's very tedious and time consuming. Plus, if you want, say, a central schematic and component database and screen menu so all of your users are referencing the same parts, you have to hack a number of files to get it to work. Plus (and this is my BIG gripe), Autodesk is using Microsoft Access as it's database structure. Talk about SLOW. Wire references are also unidirectional, which sucks when you want to use PLC addresses for wire numbers and have to reference "backwards" to previous sheets or else it won't work. As time has gone on, each successive release of AutoCad Electrical has become more bloated, more buggy, and slower. It seems like every feature they add breaks 2 or 3. The upgrade from 2012 to 2013 cost me three days of downtime. Finally, it's really easy to break the links for component and wire cross referencing. All you have to do is not do things exactly right and suddenly you'll have wire numbers that won't go over to the next sheet, or you'll have wire number carrying over through a device even though the device is clearly breaking the network and should generate a new number, and component cross references that won't update. The bottom line is that AutoCAD Electrical does not adjust to your drawing standard. You are the one who must adjust your drawing standard to fit what AutoCAD Electrical has decreed acceptable.
All that time I was supposed to save by not having to check my drawings for cross referencing errors was devoured by all that time I had to spend checking my drawings to make sure the automatic cross referencing worked. In the end, AutoCAD electrical offered little to no real advantage to me. Most of the time I just copy the previous drawing set and change what I need, anyway, so schematics really don't eat up much of my time to begin with. You'll spend way more time trying to force ACADe to do what you want it to do than you will just drawing with you want with LT.
I can agree with brstilson.I used to work with old LT with grate symbols library.
Its Dos system. But time come to move forward.
E plan look nice. But its less flexible.
I fit my self to ACE.In that way I can enjoy the power of ACE.You can not force ACE to what you want.I think I have found the bridge between.
As I wrote for small projects LT is good enough.
As I wrote for small projects LT is good enough.
AutoCAD Electrical definitely gives you more of an advantage with large projects that are unique. But with small projects, it's more of a hinderance.
Another alternative not mentioned is Aucotec's Engineering Base , which despite the title is an electrical drawing package with some flexibility on pricing. It will do panel layouts , cable routing etc . There is atry before you buy option.

My favourite command I should never have to use but use many times a day is AEREBUILD. It fixes everything. Run a project wide update after running the rebuild and all xref, wires and components will be as they should. Also use WDAUDIT. I cannot stress enough you cant use vanilla ACAD commands to manipulate or copy components. You will break the hidden pointers to the components. The software really is a piece of **** if you want to go outside the way it wants you to go.
But having vanilla ACAD as part of the install really is a huge plus. I rate it a 7 out of 10 and EPLAN a 9.
Good comments all around so far, keep them coming.
Really comes down to how much you can spend. Eplan is typically double the cost.
So, as bean counters will ask "what are my savings over time to spend double on a software package?"
ACADE doe have a FEW Quirks, It almost still seems to b a "work in progress" in development. it is nice it also fully supports AutoCAD. however this also means you have to be very wary about what AutoCAD commands you use in ACADE, you can really screw up ACADE cross-referencing.
ACADE is life. if you are responsible for HMI development, logic development and ACADE drawings, you will spend a LOT of time in just getting drawings done.
EPlan is just too expensive.
I could really use either one. But since I work for myself, I can't justify the costs. Also I can't spend the time to become proficient in either of them. I use DraftSight which is OK and free. I a perfect world, these programs would be a lot more affordable. I got a demo of EPlan and it looks like it would be great to have. Oh, well.
It depends on the typical type of system that you work on. If you are normally dealing with only 1-3 cabinets and limited interfaces to other systems that ACADE is probably for you. If you are dealing with larger systems with multiple panels and interfaces that EPLAN is better.
ACADE is a simpler system, so you should use it as such. If your work requires a more complex system than EPLAN is the way to go.
AutoCAD Electrical is a miserable excuse for a schematic program. We are a System Integrator and this program has been torturing us for some time.
Like some mentioned, you will burn more time setting up this program then it would take to hand draw a set of prints.
Nothing seems to be fluid, intuitive, or efficient in this program.
We have version 2013 and it crashes, literally, every 10-15 minutes on more then one persons work station.
I hate it with a passion.
We went with this because of the cost of EPlan but I know we made a mistake.
AutoCAD is a dinosaur of a program that was patched and cobbled together over the years to do what was required of the old system is based on.
I plan on getting a free Educational copy of Eplan, learning how to use it in my spare time, and then convince the owners to buy copies of this proper software.
I just wanted to drop a quick line and say thank you for this thread. I am doing exactly what the OP is. This is very helpful.
I use both packages but Eplan trumps AutoCad Electrical on every notion.
It's like a station wagon and a Ferrari. They will both get you where you need to go but the Ferrari (Eplan)is going to do it much easier and much faster with a lot more style.
For those using Eplan, which package are you using? Looks like they have a few options:
- Electric P8
- Center One
- Pro Panel
came across a new program. It is much simplier for the non drafting savvy. The Contructor V11.
Caddy See Electrical not bad too.
But as you look at the sites of producers of electrical equipment Eplan is most supported. I mean the databases of parts are complete for Eplan, so it saves much work of building part database on your own. And the other automated functions work brilliant.
For me Eplan is the best choice, and it saves the money you spent on it by saving lot of time.
i received for free a pcb program with a schematic program from RS.
called designspark PCB Version 5
last week i received also free designspark mechanical to make 3d drawings.
and i use elwin for electric schematics as it costs only 30 euro.
same principle as eplan.
Eplan
2 E3.series
3 Elcad
4 Solidworks Electrical
5 COMOS (Siemens)
6 Sigraf

Eplan

Eplan->CS Model Studio.

Eplan
A peculiar topic and discipline in the field of CAD, from designing electrical circuits to laying out electrical schematics for a building, electrical CADing is a complete industry all together. Electrical designing for all scales, forms, architectures and even more practical applications need a solid software package to integrate the non-electronic drawings with the electric magic. As a computer science major, I am not jumping cliffs to learn or even read about electrical CADing, but then again that’s me. And the e-CADing enthusiast should read on for a comparison of ePlan vs AutoCAD Electrical.
ePlan vs AutoCAD Electrical
How are they defined and which one is suitable for me?
AutoCAD Electrical, or ECADe is another one of Autodesk’s products aiming as electrical designs and developments for pre-production analysis and review. To most of the people who have used it, it’s like AutoCAD with a few simple but useful built-in functions and LISP scripts that automate the tasks of setting, up and other mundane tasks. A few additions to the tools and the above mentioned LISP support is all there is to ACADe. And I agree. See, in comparison, ePlan was built ground up from scratch with the ideology of an electrical CAD package as opposed to a CAD package extension. Hence, ePlan is a much more directed and flexible solution with a learning easier for the unbiased. Ex-AutoCAD users will obviously have a tougher time with ePlan. In terms of previous usage, if you’re coming from a company where all your built up libraries are in DWG and LISP format, then you should probably stick with AutoCAD. ePlan is a good solution, but not when you have years’ worth of effort precompiled in AutoCAD’s native formats.
An Important Difference.
One huge difference is the fact that Autodesk uses Microsoft’s Access as the default database in AutoCAD and hence that extends to the numerous products in the portfolio. This is for all parts, assemblies and any other drawing/design related data or metadata included. Because of this, assembly and part response in real time is slow and you cannot reference wire numbers backwards when you need to add PLC addresses.
In response, ePlan’s back end technology is a secret but whatever it is, it works. With AutoCAD you have to do it AutoCAD’s way, mold your own habits and designing methodologies according to what AutoCAD has laid out. ePlan takes all of that out of its package and gives you freedom to design from single breadboard designs to multiple sheet referencing and printing so it’s all there.
Which one is more efficient?
In terms of this design efficacy, it may even be a better idea to head over to AutoCAD LT, if you are an AutoCAD user otherwise ePlan is definitely a good choice. Don’t get us wrong. AutoCAD Electrical would help on a bigger scale. Spreading out the wiring for a 100 story building, is something AutoCAD would help with because the civil drawings (would for the most part, have been developed in AutoCAD… duh!) would be pretty complicated, not to mention the size. But if you take this one factor out, ePlan’s problems and shortcomings start to fade away. People who have experience with the AEREBUILD command after completion of the design phase will know what we’re talking about here because any component’s hidden pointers will surely need a thorough second look.
Learning Curve?
Another thing to remember is that due to ePlans design, it is not just a click and draw software package with relevant context menus like AutoCAD Electrical. This package requires you to be well trained in the know-how of electrical components and the more you know, the more you’ll understand how it is different in terms of intelligence. Moving on, ePlan is an open source software with a very friendly interface and to the point aids and support. And it needs to be that way because of the fact that it can be an alternative to ACADe even in terms of scales going one step ahead with its referencing system. Unlike ACADe’s dependence on Microsoft technology, everything can be automated and referenced for previous and new version comparisons. Seriously just try renumbering pages and see what you end up in both packages, ePlan will surely have the references contact.
Conclusion
All in all, one must remember that the ACADe package was first built for mechanical and civil drafting and designing, not for Electrical drawings. ePlan is far more expensive, almost double the cost for the same license options as with AutoCAD but the package lives up to its reputation and requisites. Any kind of task can be automated, if not automated as a software default whereas AutoCAD completely misses out on some tools and functionality because of it’s primitive heritage.

Eplan
